Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Sorensen.
Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I established AboutFace Skin Therapy in June 2014 to provide a clinical setting for clients to experience professional, results-oriented therapeutic skin treatment beyond the hurried traditional salon model for facials. My clients deserved a comprehensive consultation to establish a baseline for successful treatment, healthy, radiant skin, and a relaxing, restorative experience. Living in rural northern New England at the time, I had the vision to provide a high level of treatment that was lacking in my area and which I knew would benefit clients who were frustrated with no results from over-the-counter products and busy dermatologists treating diseases and not skin conditions. Having experienced acne as a teenager and ultimately being prescribed Accutane for my stubborn acne, I have a lot of empathy for people needing help with their skin.
I relocated to the Lowcountry in early 2022 after 20 years of New Hampshire winters and 8 successful years of treating clients in the Upper Connecticut River Valley. I reopened my business in Bluffton and offer a signature skin treatment and advanced modalities such as LED light therapy, chemical peels, diamond-tip microdermabrasion, Dermasound ultrasound, and GuaSha treatment, a Chinese facial massage therapy using a polished jade board. AboutFace Skin Therapy is proud to offer the Lowcountry a line of Dermalogica and Jane Iredale products. I use and love Dermalogica professional skin care products in the treatment room and on my skin, as well as Jane Iredale Mineral Cosmetics.
Would it have been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I opened my business in New Hampshire after living in the community for 12 years and being the mother of a son with many friends and interests. We were very active in our community. It took little time to get the business going and to experience double-digit growth every year. Relocating the business to a very saturated market during a period of record inflation has been quite challenging, requiring a laser focus on social media marketing and face-to-face networking to establish new relationships, not just new client acquisition. Getting in front of prospective clients has been the biggest challenge of opening my business in the Lowcountry because there are many opportunities to consider, all while treating clients. My business model requires explaining to people who aren’t aware of the possibilities of professional skin therapy for their skin health. Once they experience a treatment, they are usually hooked and want to explore all the possibilities for achieving healthy, radiant skin.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a licensed esthetician specializing in treating skin conditions such as acne, sensitivity, and aging skin. I am known for the healthy results my clients get on their skin through regular professional treatment, a prescribed homecare regimen, and the daily use of a recommended sun protection product. I am proud of establishing this business from an authentic place of compassion and empathy for clients concerned with their skin health and for possessing a drive to provide exceptional service to my clients. An extensive skin science education sets me apart, which has equipped me to offer tried and true treatment for clients who understand that a partnership and skin coach is the key to healthy skin.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Twenty years ago, Bluffton was a one-stoplight town on the way to Hilton Head Island. Today, it is a busy town offering world-class services, restaurants, beautiful residential settings, and many recreational opportunities; there is something for everyone in Bluffton. Old Town Bluffton is a delightful, fun destination for an excellent Farmers’ Market and surrounding boutiques, cafes, and art galleries. A lot of traffic and the growing pains of being a popular destination are aspects of life that Bluffton needs help with, particularly during the summer months with the addition of heavy tourist traffic.
