Today we’d like to introduce you to Salima Benali.
Hi Salima, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born of a passion for sewing and decoration, I created articles for children because I wanted to make personalized gifts for family, and friends, original and meaningful gifts with textiles that people gave me. I created lots of articles: cushions, pot covers, bags, and accessories; the house began to fill up with cushions, bags then I decided to share them with more people because they liked it. I had the opportunity to exhibit in shops at “L’Instant Appy,” Art and Antic showroom “Nouvel Vag” L’Isle Sur La Sorgue, France, and the motivation to create more grew. I make the various pieces in an artisanal spirit and find my textile and inspiration in Provence. My creations include accessories made from upcycled textiles, pieces of textile, production offcuts in particular French wool and noble fibers from the factory Brun de Vian Tiran, antique 19th-century cotton fabrics, and vintage fabrics from the ’50s and ’60s (found at flea markets in the Luberon), end-of-series and sleeping stocks. I also work with the recycling centers of luxury homes. All my creations are based on a principle of circular economy: using unused materials to make new decorative items in a spirit of country chic design. Create, Imagine, Inspire, Recycle, and Restore to create exceptional everyday accessories. Anti-waste and recycling inspired me to create. To continue creating and keep artisanal activity, I launched laMaisonisloise.com shop online to make you feel at home.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
There are always obstacles along the way, but the main thing is to be determined and to believe in your ambitions. I had the opportunity to fill a large quantity order, and it was my greatest challenge to meet it. A workshop helped me to complete the order, and we achieved our goal. It was a particular monthly sales order for the following month, and the number of orders increased rapidly daily, making it successful in the number of shoppers.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My specialty is “Upcycling.” Most of my creations are one-offs or small series. My most incredible pride is my passion and patience with my creations. I create with pleasure, which sets me apart from the rest, enabling me to create beautiful, original pieces.
Let’s end by discussing what matters most to you and why.
Giving and sharing pleasure keeps me going; it gives me energy and makes me happy. I’m always happy to know someone in France or on the other side of the world has bought one of my creations; it’s an honor.
