Rising Stars: Meet Sabrina Herbert

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Herbert.

Hi Sabrina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’m a storytelling family photographer living in Clarks Summit, PA (NEPA) with my husband and two small children. I have roots in the Catskill Mountains of NY – a place where the closest movie theater is 45 minutes away, a perfect night almost always includes a late-night run to McDonald’s, and nothing feels more thrilling than hopping on your motorcycle to cruise backcountry roads.

Photography started for me as a sophomore in high school, with a cheap film camera off of eBay and an entry-level Nikon DSLR with a kit lens used to snapshot my classmates in the hallways between periods, football games, and school dances for the yearbook. Those hours spent in the darkroom developing contact sheets and final images I cherish – that type of concise, patient work is the type of work I still perform today with my sessions. Each image is individually edited with love and care, and the hope that you’ll be able to cherish them for years to come as I do my own.

I’m totally obsessed with good coffee (to the point where you could almost pay me with bags of fresh beans entirely), fresh mountain air, sun-drenched summer days, and strawberries.

I’ve always yearned for adventure, and documenting my journeys with a camera has always been kind of my thing.

Close family of mine have recently moved to the Charleston area and it was the perfect opportunity to check off a bucket-list travel destination. February was the best time to visit – a much-needed escape from the freezing temps here in Pennsylvania. All it took was one sun-soaked afternoon at the Saltwater Cowboy for this girl to come home with sunburnt cheeks, fond memories, and a memory card packed with the type of adventure only South Carolina can provide.

I loved the small businesses we got to check out while down there (most notable – KISS Cafe on John’s Island, Freddo Gelatto, and Rise Coffee House in the city.)

We also loved the peace and tranquility John’s Island offered us after a busy day through the city – our Airbnb host was phenomenal to boot! We truly enjoyed the southern hospitality offered throughout our stay in South Carolina, and I truly couldn’t have enough biscuits!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Photography can be an isolating journey in general, and building a business on art has a slew of challenges. There is a tendency for me to think my work isn’t good enough (“Imposter syndrome”) that I have to constantly keep in check. Over the last 3 years, I have worked tirelessly to get my work to where I want it to be. I’ve had really amazing friends support me and I look up to really incredible photographers. I try to keep myself inspired and my workload balanced, as well as use my photography to bless others whenever I’m able. My children are a major source of my creativity – they are so fun and eager to get behind the lens.

Overall, I can’t believe I get to do this for a living. Few things give me greater joy than when a client expresses gratitude, joy, and excitement upon receipt of their gallery. I truly care about the memories I have the privilege to document for each of my clients.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in family photography but do just about everything – branding sessions for small businesses, lifestyle newborn photography, senior sessions, child milestones (like cake smashes or birthday shoots), anniversary shoots, and a sprinkle of weddings throughout the year.

I spend an insane amount of time in this business. Learning new techniques, how to best utilize my equipment (and know when to invest in more), and best practices for working with clients. I treat your family photos the way I treat my own – with care, attention to detail, and patience. I want you to cherish these photos for a lifetime, and I want to respect your time (in shopping, dressing you and your clan, driving to your shoot, and participating in it), as much as you respect mine. Photography is my passion and I am honored to be the one to document a part of your life for you.

My desire is to eventually travel throughout the country documenting people and their stories.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I care about the people I work with. I want them to see how loved and beautiful they are through the images I create for them.
