Rising Stars: Meet Rita Wright

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rita Wright.

Hi Rita, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Pack Light Candle Company was created by marrying elements of my love of science, travel, and gifting one of my favorite things, candles! Like so many other businesses, Pack Light Candle Company originated during the Covid pandemic. Working in healthcare (in the hospital setting) I felt like I needed an escape and being unable to travel around that time was difficult. I also recall wanting to desperately walk into a store and just sniff all the candles, but I couldn’t do any of that.

Candle-making was something I dabbled in years ago and never really saw it through because I wanted to get that “just right” formula and look. Years later, I tried my hand at it again with a different spin. A lot of my travel opportunities were put on hold, so I found another creative outlet in recreating travel-inspired scents—some from recent travel and others that I am still longing to experience.

Pack Light candles were inspired by destinations that entice the senses and curated to serve as a reminder that you can travel to a reminiscent space no matter your location.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This requires a two-part answer. I was a biology major in college, so all of the testing, research, more testing, and more research for candle-making was right up my alley. I’ve always loved experimenting to yield a desired outcome.

The tough part was putting myself out there WITH my product. I’m naturally a behind-the-scenes person, but I knew I couldn’t stay that way with my business. I’ve had to be vulnerable to this process of learning the ins and outs of building Pack Light Candle Company.

I never dreamt of being a business owner, in any capacity, but I’ve learned a lot about myself and what I’m truly capable of achieving.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am currently employed through Prisma Health Richland as an Occupational Therapist. This August will mark 13 years in this career that has served me (life lessons beyond imagination) and allowed me to serve others in a capacity beyond the scope of healthcare. I am truly blessed to say that I love what I do.
