Rising Stars: Meet Michael Smalls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Smalls.

Hi Michael, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well, I started my business based on my past situation, I was fighting for visitation for my kids and I got blessed with full custody of my kids. It was a 3 year battle for my children, there was so much information I never knew I needed.

So I took it upon myself to educate, encourage, and be a leader for fathers all around the world. I wanted them to know that they have rights to their children and what steps they needed to take. Where I’m from and currently residing is a mother state and it’s hard for fathers for themselves here.

So I created a podcast called Fathering365, LLC to help fathers and mothers feel safe and comfortable, and have a space for understanding the new narrative of parenting. No more bashing parents only healthy conversations of empathy, corny dad jokes, asking a a dad questions, growing up black stories, and dad hacks.

We’re changing the narrative of fathers worldwide!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
In the beginning, it was definitely not a smooth road lol the hardest part of starting my business was getting people to participate.

So I did what any entrepreneur would do I promoted my business every day until people were sick of me promoting lol I sent messages, posted on Facebook walls, did live videos, made flyers you name it I did it.

Because I didn’t make any money my first year podcasting the second year after filing taxes and spending money on equipment that’s when I made a profit.

And the main source we use called Anchor. fm added a subscription button for all podcasters that’s what helps me make more of a profit having loyal subscribers.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a podcaster/poet. I specialize in creating a space where parents do not feel judged but welcome, I feed my audience the reality of being vulnerable.

I am most known for my poetry, I was just recently featured in an epoetry book for my poem “Love you like Nip” dedicated to the late and great Nipsey Hussle. What I’m most proud of is my accomplishment in getting full custody of my kids and being an example for others.

What sets me apart from others is my love, my love for my work, my love for my audience if I’m in a bad mood I don’t record or write I can’t pour into anyone else’s cup if mine isn’t full.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes, being a chef is fun but when there’s no one to cook for and business slows down eventually you’re out of work. So I got tired of working for other people and created the podcast.

But during the crisis, I went to the gym, wore a mask, ate healthily, went to work, and went home. Rinse, wash, and repeat. I didn’t catch Covid once so I was blessed.
