Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Schur.
Hi Lori, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
With over 35 years of event planning experience, my career began in non-profit organizing fundraising events. After several years I moved to the corporate world where I worked for a worldwide firm planning events for the Training and Development Team.
I also gained experience in the sports world, overseeing sales and marketing for a minor league hockey team. Wanting to utilize all my skills I launched my event planning business, Schur Thing Events in 2017. My goal is to create memorable experiences that are unique and personal to the host of the party. My priority is always to exceed my client’s expectations and create an exceptional experience for their guests.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes. Of course, Covid was a challenge, but I was able to organize some virtual events that were fun.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
When I meet with a client for the first time I make sure to really get to know them. I want to know what their interests and passions are. Once I have that information I am able to work with my vendors to create a very unique and special experience personal to the host. No two parties or events are ever the same for me. For example, I was hired to plan a bridal shower.
The guest of honor happened to show me the dress she planned on wearing to the shower. I asked for a picture of the dress. I then commissioned an artist to create a drawing of the bride-to-be wearing the dress, holding a bouquet of hydrangeas, which were the flowers we used for the centerpieces. I then used that picture on all the signage for the party along with labels for the party favors. The reaction when she saw the sign with her likeness on it was priceless!
Another time, I was planning a 50th birthday party and the guest of honor loved sweets and loved shoes! So my baker created cupcakes shaped like shoes. Small, personal touches go a long way!
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Flexibility and creativity in adapting to the needs of both the clients and the guests is the key to success.
