Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Shorter.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started studying photography at Clemson University and grew my interest in the arts there! I then moved to Charleston, SC in 2013 where I started my career in photography first by photographing candles and then on from there working with local brands, magazines, and so on. I really developed even more of a love for photography as my husband and I started traveling in 2016 first with a trip to Scotland and then on from there in subsequent years through Europe, Switzerland, and other areas of the coastal US. My love for cooking and photography merged over the years and I have been documenting my personal journey of cooking through still life photography as well as continuing my work in commercial, editorial, and wedding photography to keep me busy! I love doing a little bit of everything.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Going full-time free-lance about 6 or 7 years ago was a huge jump. It was the scariest part of my career, but also the most natural. I was able to navigate that transition thanks to some flexible work with specific brands that helped me a ton by trusting me + hiring me early on. I also found an incredible community in Charleston of other photographers, designers, customers, etc. and it really helped to have that support system in my early years.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work these days has narrowed in a bit, but only a bit. 🙂 I specialize in lifestyle photography done in natural light with a minimalistic direction style. I also have found a unique career in wedding photography these days that I am very proud of and I am constantly finding avenues within this genre that interest me. Dynamics between family members are fascinating and I like getting to document this experience. I also am an avid home cook and find most of my creative juice in the kitchen. I like to build still-life photographs from the produce I grow or get from local farmers to make interesting compositions that really just make me happy. I am working on a small book/zine in the upcoming year or so that hopefully will highlight more of this sort of work as well as all the creatives I admire in my community by way of food. 🙂
Where do you see things going in your industry in the next 5-10 years?
I can see it getting paired down some- fewer people on set, more minimal, maybe even more remote work? Who knows though? I think the pandemic had a huge effect on the way our industry functions and we are all just trying to shake off the past couple of years and find our way into this new season. I hope it continues to shift into a more collaborative and inclusive community- that would be my main desire.
