Today we’d like to introduce you to Lex Paige.
Hi Lex, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
For sure! So, my business is Paige Media Co, I provide social media & content creation services to business owners who want to bring their social media to life. I’m a firm believer that social media is an embodiment of your business or brand that your audience or customers should be able to interact with – while keeping it as simple as possible!
It’s always so hard to tell where the story of Paige Media Co starts, haha! I unofficially started my business in 2016 by providing social media support to a friend who owned an e-commerce store. She had approached me asking for help in curating her business social media accounts – at this point, I had no experience with anything in this realm & her only inclination to reach out was based on how I was curating my personal account! Right place at the right time.
At the time, the thought of owning my own business was so far out of reach, so I just worked with her on the side of my full-time job for about 2 years before I realized what I was doing was a service that other businesses would also benefit from. I slowly started building the back end of my business, & I started reaching out to & connecting with more business owners to tell them about this new service that I was providing.
By 2019 I had built up a clientele that was almost to the point of being able to quit my full-time job to pursue this business full time. Fast forward a little bit to early 2020 when thousands of businesses had to learn how to navigate running their business digitally while the world was in the process of shutting down, & my inquiries went insane. A few weeks before we were officially in the pandemic, I was able to leave my full-time & dove headfirst into entrepreneurship.
Now in 2022, I’ve worked behind the scenes of over 100 businesses, I currently have a full roster of amazing clients that I’m so unbelievably lucky to work with, I’ve started helping others pursue a career in social media management, & recently just launched a podcast to help others learn how to survive on social media!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not!
Being a business owner has tested my patience, mental stability, & finances in ways that I never thought possible! At the end of the day, I’m incredibly thankful for the experience, but if I could go back, there’s a lot I would have done differently!
One of the biggest struggles has been learning & accepting that not everything is going to be perfect the first time around. If anything, I’ve learned that you not only need to have a plan A but also a plan B through Z. Always be ready for the unexpected because the only thing when owning a business that stays consistent, is change.
Another huge struggle is that I struggle with perfectionism & imposter syndrome, big time!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So right now, most of my client work focuses heavily on short-form video. When TikTok surged during the pandemic a lot of people looked at it as “that kid’s app that people do dances on”. Which, at the time wasn’t completely wrong, haha! However, I found myself on the small business side of the platform & was BLOWN away at how much potential was there for businesses to grow organically. When Instagram Reels became relevant, I really started to transition to more video-focused packages because I knew that was where the reach for businesses was going to come from.
The work that I’m most proud of is teaching people that this type of content doesn’t have to be “cringey”, it can actually be a powerhouse of a marketing tool when it’s used correctly. Most of my clients are routinely hitting a reach of 10,000 people per post all because of the research & time that we put into implementing their content strategy.
Over the last 2 years, I’ve really found my own style, learned what platforms I enjoy working with the most, & the most recent project that I’m super excited for & proud of, is my podcast The Social Media Survival Guide! I’m excited to reach new people & see how they can start seeing these changes in their business too!
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Oh yes. Like I had said before when covid was shutting the world down, I was being contacted by 10+ businesses per day who needed help transitioning their business from operating primarily in person, to being solely on social media. There were a lot of little social media “things” I knew like the back of my hand that I was realizing so many people weren’t leveraging. I hate to say that I was benefitting in a time where so many people were facing the exact opposite, but all I can say is that I’m thankful to have been able to help even a tiny, tiny, percentage of businesses owners stay open & stay afloat by helping them learn the world of social media!
It also reinforced the fact that you not only need a plan A but a plan B through Z, always!
