Today we’d like to introduce you to Leighann Spitzmiller.
Hi Leighann, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
After working at a corporate job for eight years, I took a leap to focus on my own business, Sunless Glow by LA, a custom spray tanning company based in Atlanta, GA. When I initially started spray tanning, it was not something I imagined I would pursue and leave my position at Coca-Cola, however, as I now approach my one-year anniversary of running Sunless Glow by LA as my full-time business, I cannot imagine life any differently.
I am my own boss, make my own schedule, and am passionate about the clients I service on a daily basis. I left my 9-5 job to work 24/7 but wouldn’t have it another way. I no longer sit and watch the clock until I can go home. I wake up excited to see clients and make them feel better about themselves. When you work in the beauty industry and your job is to boost someone’s confidence, it is truly so rewarding.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the struggles I deal with is the control aspect of hiring and training a new employee. People have different learning styles and I am constantly learning how to adapt to train them in the best way possible.
I am not always confident in my training technique and ultimately feel nervous and anxious about leaving clients with a new employee for their service. But I am working on it and want to succeed in growing my business by training new spray tan artists to do an amazing job.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am most known for natural-looking spray tans for brides. It is a stereotype that you will look orange if you get a spray tan and my formula is so natural looking that it is popular for brides, actresses, bodybuilders, models, and most importantly men and women of all skin tones.
I am most proud of tanning clients every single day. The first few times I was tanning models and actresses in the city, I was pretty proud. I was shocked at some of the names I was gaining as clients but I knew it was because I was doing a good job and they were continuing to come back to me because they trusted me.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
You have to put yourself out there in so many ways. Talking to anyone and everyone, introducing yourself, and explaining what you do and why you are worthy. It is also important to not worry about being not good enough or being judged on social media. And you have to work hard every single day.
There is a reason why not everyone can be an entrepreneur and it’s because it is a lot of work and a lot of grinds. Sometimes I work 14-hour days and it’s exhausting but I love it.
