Rising Stars: Meet Kiley Murphy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiley Murphy.

Hi Kiley, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to do something in the beauty field, but I didn’t know where to start or what to do. I enrolled in cosmetology at another school that was basically a trade school for students to go to while still in high school. It was a 3-year process from grades 10th,11th, and 12th. In those 3 years, we learned all the skills, foundation, anatomy, and more that you needed to be able to work with hair, nails, and skin. Also, in those 3 years, we got enough hours we needed to take our cosmetology state board test the end of our 12th-grade year. Along the process, I figured out that doing nails was what interested me the most. I knew it was something I was passionate about once I started practicing outside of class and trying to better my skills. All of my high school years, I practiced on myself, a practice hand, and even started gaining some clients along the way. When my 12th-grade year came around and it was time to take the test, I got discouraged a little but in the end, I passed both of my theory and practical exams. I became a licensed cosmetologist at 17 and a high school graduate. I am currently 19 years old with my own nail business and I couldn’t be more proud of myself for not giving up.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This journey has most definitely not been a smooth road. As a young entrepreneur that has dreams and goals set for yourself, you will always run into obstacles along the way, but it will only make you push harder. As a nail tech, I’ve learned that you can not please every client that sits in your chair, but that does not mean you aren’t amazing at what you do. I’ve also learned that you have to stand on your rules for your business and not let anyone take advantage of you. I learn something new every day and that will only make me better at what I do. Without the support from my mom and dad, I would not be where I am today. I am glad they did not force me to go to college, but just to follow my dreams. Mrs. Trina and Mrs. Kourtney always seen potential in me in class when I did not see it in myself. Without any of this, I would not be where I am today. My own apartment, successful business, and many other things to be thankful for at just 19 years old because of my talent.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a nail artist and I would like to say I specialize in being creative. I love when clients let me freestyle on their nails meaning I have full control of colors and designs. This gives me the ability to think outside the box or challenges me to think of designs. I am very proud of how far I have come since the day I started cosmetology to now. I know my 15-year-old self would be very proud of who I am and where I am today at 19 years old. I have improved since I started from day one because I am passionate and I was determined to get better. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for me and how much I will improve.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I really just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me. Whether you are a client or if you just share my work. I am very grateful for everything and how much I have accomplished so far. To my cosmetology instructors, thank you for seeing potential in me and pushing me to do my best. To my mom and dad, thank you for supporting my dream and I wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for y’all. Even though I have accomplished so much already, I can’t wait until I own my own salon.
