Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Cobb.
Hi Kelly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Summer of 2020 I heard from a college friend who had started a yard sign business in Birmingham, Alabama. She encouraged me to start one here in Charleston. I wasn’t looking to start a new business but once I saw her signs I knew I had to give it a try.
I have always enjoyed being creative and dabbling in art so this sign business was the perfect fit. I wasn’t buying into a chain rather she gave me pointers on how she got started. I bought my plywood, tools, and paint in August 2020 and created Sassy Signs Charleston.
I asked friends and neighbors the first few months if I could do signs for their friends and family for free just to show others what I was up to. The word spread fast and I have installed signs on John’s island, Summerville, downtown, mount pleasant, Hanahan, and Daniel Island. . I cut sand and paint these signs in my garage and have over 60 signs in my inventory.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The hardest part was definitely in the beginning because I was creating my inventory. I had a teaching job so after school and in the evening was when I was able to make the signs. In the beginning, I had some late nights of painting. Since then it has been steady. Like any business, some months are busier than others.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
There are many yard sign businesses in Charleston but Sassy Signs Charleston is unique. These signs are 3-5 feet tall and made out of plywood. I cut sand and paint these signs. Customizing these signs for the customer is always fun.
We do a lot of birthdays but there are so many other occasions we love celebrating like anniversaries, new babies, the first day of school, engagements, retirement, and more.
We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I have enjoyed the creative process of making these signs but seeing the customer and the recipient’s reaction is the best! Providing a service that makes others so happy is a success.
Pricing:
- 2signs are $85 then $10 for each additional sign.
- The baby carriage is $90 and stays in the yard for a week as a birth announcement.
