Today we’d like to introduce you to Keira Kroin.
Hi Keira, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My holistic journey began when I was in high school and college. I was a very serious and competitive volleyball player and suffered from multiple injuries requiring me to undergo four different surgeries on my legs within four years. This left me completely immobile for some time and quite depressed. My volleyball career was over, and I needed some powerful inspiration to get me through. I started learning about yoga as a healing modality and ended up getting certified as an instructor, which truly supported my physical and mental health recovery.
I noticed how I was not offered much support in my healing journal by modern physicians and surgeons and had to seek the care I desired on my own. I ended up working with my university to create a major called Holistic Health and Wellness. My love of herbs started here when I was able to take a course on wild edible plants. I graduated and ended up traveling to apprentice with a Native American herbalist and healer and started learning the process of traditional herbal medicine.
From here, I began traveling the world and spent two years in Asia learning about herbal medicine from different cultures, like Ayurveda. I returned to the States in 2020 and decided to get my Master’s degree in Integrative Nutrition and Clinical Herbalism. I have been making wild medicine by hand for five years and seeing clients directly for about two years. This world of working with the earth for healing has become my true love and passion!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Absolutely, not! There have been many ups and downs along the way, but I have learned that the challenges teach us the most.
If we are struggling, whether it be in a relationship, with finances, with our body, or our mental health, when we can overcome these challenges is when we realize how resilient we really are-and this is a beautiful gift.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a holistic nutritionist and herbalist with a deep medical knowledge that I pair with love and spirituality. I make herbal medicine for clients using fully organic herbs. Many of the herbs I use in my medicine are locally grown or wildcrafted.
My medicine is unique because I create based on my client’s needs, so it is very personalized. I take a scientific approach to formulation, but when working with my clients directly, we often move through a deep, spiritual healing journey.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I have so many mentors I don’t think I could list them all. My mother was and still is my first mentor. As a clinical psychologist, she really inspired me to love all parts of myself, even the uncomfortably emotional ones. She helped me learn how to be a wonderful listener and allow others to feel their emotions and channel them into healthy avenues. I had a lovely partner in college, Yahdy, who truly inspired me to start becoming more aware of how I speak to myself.
He helped me learn how to use kind, loving language to speak to myself as if I were speaking to someone I loved. He helped me understand self-love. My college advisor, allowed me to create my own major, which was such an incredible experience. Daphne Singingtree was the incredible herbalist I apprenticed with in Oregon.
She also worked with Sue Silvester, an incredible wealth of herbal knowledge. All my professors at the Maryland University of Integrative Health also deserve so much love for helping me dive deeply into the materials that I love so much related to herbal medicine, food, and healing.
