Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Barrett.
Hi Erin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In 2014, I came across an online tutorial on beginner weaving. I was instantly struck with the craft and the art of weaving. The ability to work and create with my hands using a variety of colors and materials really spoke to me. What started as a hobby, quickly blossomed into the business that Sunwoven is today!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
For the most part, running Sunwoven has come easily and is full of joy for me. Starting a small business from the ground up definitely comes with a lot of trial and error and some mistakes along the way. Learning how to manage growth and hire help was a big one for me. After a few years, we have finally found a groove that works well for us and allows us to keep creating new work and working through new ideas, all while being able to fulfill orders and keep up with the business side of things.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We create handwoven wall hangings and other forms of fiber arts from my home studio. Everything is handmade from start to finish in my home studio out of Charleston, SC. It is myself and my coworker, Abby Crawford, who create all of the handmade pieces. Nothing is mass-produced, and most of our work is custom or made to order. Each piece is completely unique and one of a kind!
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I grew up studying ballet and had a short career (7 years) as a professional ballet dancer. My summers in my formative years were spent traveling and attending ballet summer intensives. Those were such a gift of experience and personal growth that shaped me into the person I am today. I am so grateful for that.
