Rising Stars: Meet Elizabeth Harvey of Moncks Corner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Harvey.

Hi Elizabeth, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Health issues as a child led me to become a physical therapist. Since then, I have been on a journey to find natural ways to heal the body and allow people to enjoy their lives without pain or limitation. Renewal Therapeutics is the clinic I want for myself and my loved ones so we can live our best lives. We offer lifestyle medicine, rehabilitation, pelvic floor therapy, and state-of-the-art technology to aid the body in what it does best repair itself! I have served Berkeley County for over 16 years as a physical therapist and have now expanded into this wellness and women’s health adventure! It is what I would have wanted after going through the challenges that came with pregnancy and delivery. I want to offer women real solutions to regain strength, confidence, and vitality. Too many women accept pain and dysfunction as the “new norm” and press through, but this is unacceptable! At Renewal, we are on a mission to give people in our community “strength for life!”

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
I had many medical challenges as a child, which led me to pursue a career in healthcare. My personal journey developed great compassion in me. I have practiced for 20 years; the spring of 2022 brought with it the desire to expand into women’s health and wellness services. I read once that the most treacherous paths lead to great destinations – I believe it to be true! It was a big leap of faith to go from a small clinic to a large facility in a medical complex, especially with a recession on the horizon. One I took with the support of my family and closest friends as I followed my call to bring holistic medicine to my community.

Three weeks after I moved into the clinic, I was diagnosed with a lesion in my sacrum. We are still trying to determine its nature so we can plan the treatment. In the meantime, many of the modalities I already have in place have kept me strong! So, I am on my health journey as well. I am creating the clinic I need for me, my family, and my community.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have covered a lot of ground over the past thirty years of learning and clinical work, literally! Local and international humanitarian efforts to promote wellness and prevention across populations have carried me across the globe, from Kenya to Maui. My passion sets me apart. The human body is designed to heal itself; understanding and exploiting these processes has been a lifelong pursuit. I specialize in people who have been told nothing else can be done for them. I excel in the treatment of patients with complex neurologic and orthopedic challenges. From this population, a deeper understanding of the impact of scar tissue has emerged, leading to innovative treatment strategies and research efforts. I have published work on scar tissue, which is also my dissertation topic. I use a holistic approach, including manual techniques, Kinesio tape, focal and whole-body vibration, and nutritional consultation.

The most recent career advancement has been the creation of Renewal Therapeutics LLC, where these skills can be expanded to include women’s health and wellness services, including photobiomodulation and cryotherapy. My love for learning how best to treat patients is only matched by my desire to share this knowledge. I am on faculty with Summit Professional Education and teach continuing education courses for SC and NC Area Health Education Centers, Kinesio University, and Ciao Seminars. I have also served as an assistant professor at Augusta University and a guest lecturer at Hampton University. My greatest accomplishment is being the mother of three boys – something the doctors did not think possible from my childhood illnesses! They are such a blessing. They are my biggest fans and my source of strength and comic relief! Without my family’s support, the rest of my life of service would not be possible.

What makes you happy?
I was built to serve! It brings me great joy to spend time with someone who has been told their situation is hopeless and to get to the root issue. People are frustrated with the productivity standards that traditional medicine has placed upon healthcare workers, leaving little time to hear a person’s story. For me, this is critical to determine the way forward, especially in chronic pain situations. I can treat the whole patient in private practice, not look at a single body part. Bodies don’t work that way! We are designed to work with integrated systems operating in harmony. My job is to figure out where the process has gone awry and offer holistic solutions.

Renewal is an extension of the twenty-year partnership I have had with the children of my community. I am a nationally certified pediatric specialist. In serving infants, I found that the mothers needed to take time to care for their own health needs. My mission is to restore women’s health so they can care for their families and do the things they love. Many women push through a lot of pain and dysfunction, accepting it as normal. I want to change that paradigm! The byline of Renewal is “strength for life.” This does not exclude males from our services, though! I treat across populations, even elite athletes. Everyone should have the capacity to live life to the fullest.
