Rising Stars: Meet Dallas Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dallas Baker.

Hi Dallas, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been playing some type of musical instrument since the 5th grade. The strings program was so fun as a kid. Once I got into high school I became obsessed with playing music. My high school buddy really got me into Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, and I still love that music today. He showed me how to play bass and then I went on a self-taught spree playing acoustic guitar

Once I reached my early twenties I got an offer to play in a rowdy new grass band called Steel Rollers. Fun group of dudes. I remember the day I responded to their Craigslist ad. I ended up adding harmonica and mandolin to my repertoire of instruments. Those guys were very inspirational to me. After Steel Rollers, I started a jam band called Big John Belly with one of my coworkers at Five Loaves Cafe. The band was so awesome, and I became a huge fan of the Grateful Dead in BJB. But deep down I still loved Bluegrass/Old Time/Americana. All of this was sometime around 2013/2014. Can’t remember it all, it was such a great start to having a successful music career.

So while I was in BJB, the marketing director of Holy City Brewing at their old Dorchester Road location needed someone to play there on a Friday night. So he told me to get some friends together. When I asked what we’d call it he said Dallas Baker and Friends. Fast forward to 10 years later, and with an unknown abundance of gigs here we are! One thing I love about DB&F is the variety of musicians I get to perform with. We have one album out called Albemarle Blues. Stream away!!!

Lately, I’m in love with my fiancé, and the band we started The Dalleas (like The Dahlias) kicked off this concept in Jan 2021. And plan to release a single very soon. Catch us in and around the Holy City of Charleston SC. Stay in touch via Instagram, FB, and Twitter Add us to Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, and YouTube.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Always! It gets expensive along the way. Especially studio time, MERCH, etc. And the late nights associated with playing bars and late-night music venues keep ya up late!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a musician, outdoors expert, Paddlesports professional, boat captain, dog dad, cat dad, and fiancé to the amazing Lorra Lea.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
That we can play Lizzo.
