Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
My journey in the field began with experimentation in various art forms, including ink drawings and scientific illustrations. After college and traveling, I returned to Charleston and, on impulse, decided to explore tufting. Captivated by tufting videos and tutorials, I immersed myself in learning the craft full-time, eventually establishing my own business and successfully selling my work within months.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In my journey, mastering tufting and managing my business is relatively smooth overall. Though I’ve encountered minor challenges, I approach each day as a learning opportunity. As an artist, honing the craft comes naturally, while navigating the complexities of operating as a one-woman show poses the real challenge.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Rug tufting, while gaining popularity online, is a relatively rare medium to work with. Many times at events, I find myself educating people on the process and getting to be the first to introduce them to the art of tufting. I describe it to people as drawing with yarn punched through a canvas by a small handheld power tool, followed by an extensive trimming and carving process. The majority of my business is custom commission work. It makes up for about 85% of my work. It is always fascinating for me to work with people to create a unique vision they have and allow it to come to life. Whether it’s a pet portrait, an alligator runner, or a loved one’s favorite pair of cowboy boots, I can create designs the customers choose. While I specialize in custom work, I also have my specialty designs that are quite popular. My favorites are sushi rugs, sardine tin cans, monstera leaves, and dunky fish patterns.
