Rising Stars: Meet Brittany Alston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Alston.

Hi Brittany, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Well, let’s see… I have always been intrigued by the arts. Whether it’s film, theater, museums, documentaries, tv shows, art galleries, etc. I am interested in it! I remember, in high school, taking a set design class and in college, I also took a couple of art classes. My interest in art has always been there; it’s just until recently, I have truly started to become more focused on my artwork. And as a result, it’s been paying off and I am forever grateful!

Currently, I sell my artwork in my online store (www.Sunflowersmuse.com) and my online art gallery ( Artpal.com/Sunflowersmuse ) all while constantly working and trying to master my craft!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wish I could say it was a smooth road, but it truly isn’t. For me personally, finding more art opportunities, galleries, employment, etc. for my artwork has been an issue. There have been times when I’ve reached out to volunteer my time to gain more work/art experience, and I still was told “No.” But I have to keep moving forward.  So, I would definitely like to change that for myself and for other artists because it’s extremely hard to break into this industry.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Right now, I specialize in photography and cinematography. I enjoy taking pictures and creating short videos. Eventually, I plan on expanding my artistry and having my artwork in galleries, museums, etc. all over the world.

I feel what set me apart from others is my wide range of artwork. I like to make “aesthetically pleasing” artwork, but I also like to make artwork to remind the viewer of what issues are currently going on in the world that needs to change.
What are you most proud of?
As of today, I am so proud of my accomplishments! I have two of my photographs permanently on display at the Medical University of South Carolina for their “Art in Healing” Program, I have been published in multiple online exhibitions and I was a background actress on Mr. Mercedes. I was a runway photographer for Charleston Fashion Week.  Also, my artwork has been featured in Len’s Culture Online Gallery (5 times) and I was able to volunteer on a Habitat for Humanity Commerical.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Even though I am an artist, people might be surprised that I have a Master’s Degree in Legal Studies with a Concentration in Conflict Resolution.
