Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Teusink.
Hi Barbara, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
When I was young, I loved drawing and creative pursuits. Later, I took the “sensible” route and earned a business degree. For many years, I put my artwork on hold while working demanding jobs and caring for my house and husband. When I retired in 2012 from a career in technology and education, I decided to rekindle my creative side and took up painting. I’m so glad that I did! There is so much to love in drawing and painting. Using line and color to create visual representations of the many glorious beauties in our world is magic to me. It’s so rewarding to touch someone by having them be moved and drawn in by one of my works. I also love that there is always something more to learn and try. I enjoy experimenting with various techniques for representing diverse subject matter. A passion for learning is vital in creating art, and I love discovering something new with each painting. I am now an award-winning artist whose oil paintings hang in private collections across the US. Designated as a Crooked Creek Art League Master artist, my work has won multiple first-place awards in their shows and numerous awards in other local and regional competitions. A big believer in the power of community in art and life, I am very active in the Crooked Creek Art League. As a multiple-term past president, my current roles include:
- Running the digital presence for CCAL
- Planning and managing the league’s projects
- Placing community art all around town

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Planning and attention to detail have always been a part of my approach to life. Learning to paint has been no exception. An ongoing love of researching, trying, and learning new things has served me well in this pursuit. The most challenging thing for me has been to learn and apply all the required tasks essential to being a successful entrepreneur and a small business owner marketing my artwork. The art-making process and the dedication necessary for running a small business are very different things. Learning to maintain an appropriate balance is key. It can be tough to be successful as an artist, but the rewards can be immense.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a visual artist who works primarily in oil paint. As a contemporary realist, my subjects include still life, flowers, animals, portraits, figures, and landscapes. A trained Master Naturalist, my work generally reflects the beauty and wonder provided by nature. Continual improvement through diligent self-study and occasional workshops is important as I strive to capture life’s fleeting moments: an expression or gesture, the light, the season, or a striking arrangement. I strive to capture the elusive magical play of color and light in each piece.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Even as a child, I was fascinated and rejuvenated by nature, and I was always creating: drawing, crocheting, macramé, needlework – you name it, I probably tried it. I was a serious child and loved the problem-solving aspects of figuring out how to ‘get it right’ as I mastered each new challenge. As an adult, it has been a thrill to find a way to bring all my various loves together with my artwork.
