Today we’d like to introduce you to Zac Herrin.
Hi Zac, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Asheboro, North Carolina, and have been playing music as long as I can remember. My family has musicians on both sides and so I have always just grown up around music and being comfortable expressing myself through it. I started performing when I was 7 and from there I always enjoyed getting up and playing in front of people. I played talent shows and open mics and really didn’t take it too serious until after I graduated college. I graduated right as COVID was hitting and my entire plans for post-graduation were ruined. My childhood best friend went to the Citadel and his plans were also ruined so we got the bright idea to move to Charleston on a whim and spend a year doing whatever we could to work and make ends meet. At this time, I had really gotten into writing and recording my own music which was something rather new to me. I began putting together setlists of original and cover songs I could play and realized I had enough for a full show. From there is started reaching out to places and was lucky enough to have my first show at Henry’s on the Market which is the oldest live music venue in Charleston! From there it wasn’t long before I decided this is what I was here to do and what I wanted to be. Since then, I’ve recorded several of my originals and am looking to release my first single “Charleston Heat” (based on my time in Charleston) next month.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. One of the biggest obstacles I face every day is the struggle of balancing a “normal” job with my music. I call myself the “Zac of all trades” because I have been a substitute teacher, worked at The Home Depot, been an airport tarmac agent, worked construction, announced motorcycle races, and done pretty much anything I can in order to help stay afloat and keep my dream moving! To be someone that wants to rely on their creativity for their career, it requires a level of self-confidence that is bulletproof. It makes no logical sense to turn down positions and walk away from money to chase a dream, but to be successful you have to know that you can do it and that no one can stop you. It’s something I struggle with to this day but I’m not going anywhere! This is why I’m here.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I suppose my title would be a singer/songwriter but I currently am a solo artist that plays shows comprised of cover songs and my originals. Around Charleston my song “Charleston Heat” was always popular and once released, it will be the first original music I have put out to the world. I would say my specialty is playing guitar and singing but I can play variety of instruments and try to use that to my advantage while I don’t have a band. On my recordings I play every instrument so, my songs are 100% me. I feel like my sound and style is unique enough to stand apart from the crowd, but familiar enough to spark interest and gain a following. I’m just excited to see what the future holds.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
At the end of the day, I want to be able to say that I chased my dreams and gave them everything I had. My favorite thing to tell people is that “I’m perfectly fine with failing, but I can’t live with not trying”. I want to make that little boy that had ripped blue jeans, a t-shirt, and a six-string in 2nd grade proud. I am extremely blessed to have a family that supports me and will be proud of me no matter what happens. So, for me, I just want to be able to say I tried my hardest and was a good person along the way.
