Today we’d like to introduce you to Yakima Chinn.
Hi Yakima; so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I decided to open Topaz Occupational Health Services after realizing in 2017 that I had a passion for testing. I’m motivated by meeting new people. I want to provide companies testing at a lower cost to help cut costs within the company. I’m striving to fill the need of the community by serving the people. Things began to take form in Jan 2021, and I opened in May 2021, and I’m still going strong. My passion for people and your connection with patients are so dear to my heart. Being a part of my community and providing my services makes my heart sing. I want to help create a change. We offer drug testing( Hair, saliva, urine, nail bed), Paternity testing, Background checks, lab services, Notary, Fingerprinting scanning, Peek a boo testing. Breath Alcohol, Mental health Coaching, mobile and after-hour services). My slogan is One Passion, One Purpose, Keeping Companies healthy and safe.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I had negative feedback back from my previous job. When I started, I tried to do so many services instead of focusing on a few and spending money unnecessarily. It gets rough having more money going out than coming in. It’s been hard to gain contracts from companies; some of my struggles to balancing life with being an entrepreneur with home life and taking time for myself. Some weeks are good, and some are nothing, but I continue to trust God and keep pushing forward. Learning to market and let the community know I’m a service to them. You find out what works and what doesn’t, so you must eliminate and add a lot. Being the first black-owned woman in Occupational Health in greenwood also has been a challenge. Setting myself apart from other companies by setting boundaries as a minority tapping into the business.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My main goal for Topaz is to help companies comply with OSHA guidelines and help businesses maintain a drug-free environment. My team and I put the client’s occupational needs first. We strive to provide high-quality customer services, medical experience, and commitment to health and wellness to all patients. I aim to become a preferred partner for occupational health-related services in the local area for various industries. I also offer mobile services.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I have always been the person to try anything, and I would always set my goals and accomplish them, Growing up, I faced many obstacles parent divorce and the death of my mom, but I have always been the person to live life and enjoy it to the fullest. I enjoy reading and writing poems and spending time with family. I have a close family, so they provide the support and guidance I need to get me through life. I’m also quiet and shy, so putting myself at the forefront has been challenging.
