Meet Vanessa Broin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Broin.

Vanessa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my journey as a makeup artist when I was in junior high! My mother took me to a makeup class hosted by MAC cosmetics. It was one of those classes open to the public if you register in advance and agree to make a purchase.

I remember just being absolutely mesmerized by the instructor, she was so cool, confident, and talented. She brought me up to be a “model” and did my makeup for the class with baby blue eyeshadow and a nude lip.

My mom bought me the whole look and I was instantly hooked. Years later, after I graduated college, I got a job at MAC cosmetics and that’s when my career officially started. I worked retail jobs for several cosmetic lines before finally starting my own company in 2010.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Teaching yourself how to run a business with no previous experience, has its own set of challenges. There was a lot of trial and error discovering what worked and what didn’t over the years. I did countless unpaid shoots to build my portfolio in the beginning and went to lots of business networking events.

It wasn’t the easiest path but I don’t regret a moment of it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I mostly specialize in doing clean, fresh-faced glam for bridal clients. But I equally love going the opposite direction and getting creative with Halloween or fantasy makeup. Makeup is meant to be fun and I enjoy the variety of what you can create with it.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
During Covid, I definitely had to pivot, which resulted in me moving myself and my business to South Carolina!
