Today we’d like to introduce you to Torry Hermann.
Hi Torry, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Torry Hermann, a comedian and content creator. I started about a year and a half ago when I posted my first comedy video comparing Russian vs. American wives on TikTok. The video went viral overnight, and ever since, I have found exactly what I am so passionate about, making people laugh, especially in difficult times. I worked at a high-end car dealership – BMW and Rolls-Royce – for over 5 years as a sales executive while completely hating my life with no time off, no vacations, and a high-paced work environment where I’d be yelled at all day long by my managers. I decided to quit when my boss emailed me a long note CC’ing everybody from the office on that email – calling my comedy a pathetic joke that will never make me any money – and asked me to either start putting in 100% of my time in selling cars or quit. So I went ahead and quit 🙂 Ever since I was faced with the fact that now I have to make somehow what I love most – comedy – my income, I started advertising, and helping other companies grow their social media accounts. Eventually, I started making way more money than I ever would at my car sales job. So, if somebody ever tells you “you can’t,” use this as an excuse to show them that you can!
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been difficult in terms of realizing that by putting myself out there, I should expect and understand that I will receive criticism and manh many negative comments – which I did, and I’ve been bullied – for how I look, I’ve been called a slut, a golddigger, a plastic doll, etc. Instead of shutting down and being upset, I used my example to show women how to stay strong against bullying.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love creating comedy skits that are not just there to make people laugh but also to help women become stronger. I always talk about abusive relationships, how to get over a breakup, or live through a divorce, etc. – to help women understand that they are not alone in their journey. Together, we can laugh at such situations and help each other grow.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
People will like you, and people will not like you. People will endorse you, and people will criticize you. People will support you and bully you – and if you choose to have a social media presence, be ready not only to receive positive feedback. Learn not to pay attention to bullying and keep creating. Only some videos will be viral. Only some comments will be positive. But if my video positively affects at least one person, helps one woman go through a divorce, or teaches one girl to leave an abusive relationship, I did something right.
