Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom and Laurie Woods. They share their story with us below:
FIVE Design is a Myrtle Beach firm that specializes in custom home design, planning, interior finishes and construction drawings.
A husband and wife team, Tom and Laurie came to Myrtle Beach on family vacations and fell in love with the beauty of the Grand Strand and its coastal lifestyle. It was always a dream to live in a place where friends and family would want to come to visit. They took the leap a few years ago and never looked back.
With Tom’s background in architecture and Laurie’s experience in design, it seemed natural to team up to form FIVE Design (named after their blended family of five amazing kids).
Tom’s love of architecture began simply enough. As a young boy he built countless homes, baseball stadiums and hospitals out of Legos. He also loved drawing and hand lettering, so the field of architecture was a perfect fit. He began his career as an architect in Pennsylvania and has over 30 years of commercial and residential experience. His body of work includes award-winning projects such as residence halls and academic buildings on the campus of Elon University, along with condos, churches, schools, and many, many homes. In addition to designing homes, Tom coordinates with structural engineers and contractors to facilitate the home building process.
Laurie’s background includes owning a residential design business in Pennsylvania as well as managing commercial interior work on projects such as UNCW and Coldwell Banker offices in the Carolinas. Laurie assists in managing the day-to-day operations of the office, business development, space planning and selection of interior finishes.
Together, they love to help potential homeowners translate their dreams into reality. In fact, many of their clients are now friends.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the challenges has been keeping up with the great demand for our services. We quickly learned that home builders need designs and drawings in a timely manner in order to retain their clients and keep their projects on track. So we made that our goal – we set out to provide fast turnaround while maintaining quality and consistency. With the exploding housing market here, we’ve added to our team of architectural associates and drafts people in order to stay true to our mission.
