Meet Tammie Williams of Natural Effects Massage and Skin Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammie Williams.

Hi Tammie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
God gifts us all with special talents. I discovered at a young age mine was the gift of healing. Before I even knew what massage therapy was I have always had a knack for putting my hands on people and helping to relieve their pain. After a suggestion from a co-worker in 1994 I finally enrolled in massage school and received my license in 1995.

Over the years, I have worked with Chiropractors, physical therapists, medical doctors as well as owning my own massage therapy clinic. Since moving to Greenville nine years ago, I decided to go back to school to receive my esthetics license and offer my clients even more services. Even though I am the only therapist in my office I can offer a variety of services.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say for the most part it has been a smooth road. The biggest struggle as with any service business is the up and down. Clients come and go. I have clients today that when I go back to a town I had lived in before, Brunswick GA, and Hudson Florida, that still want massages from me.

But then you have what I call you are passing-through clients or your bargain hunters. They will show up if you’re running a special or because they just like to try various therapists but never settle down. I could be so slammed this week, I can’t fit in another massage but next week only do 1 or 2.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am the only therapist so when you book you don’t have to wonder who will be working on you. My hours are flexible and once you become a regular client if something comes up and you can’t come during my regular hours I will stay later to fit your schedule. I also do house and office calls. My massage prices are fixed. I don’t have different prices for different modalities. I customize the massage for your needs.

If you need deep tissue with a little relaxation or vice versa that is what you get. Have some. Lymphatic issues and need to throw in some cupping? I got you and I won’t charge extra. I have always loved trigger point massage mixed in with what I call relaxing deep work. I start slow and allow your body to open up to let me get into the muscle.

I also always ask for an open line of communication so I know if you need more or less. Another thing that sets me apart is I do 2 hours (or longer) massages. People really do get the opportunity to get into a deep state of relaxation with the longer massages.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Not to take things personally. When a client doesn’t come as often as I would like or they leave to go to another therapist it usually is about their finances or they just need something different. I learned early in my career that as therapists we all have something unique to bring to the table.

And I don’t always have what someone needs. I have always loved having other therapists as well as other natural healers such as chiropractors to refer clients to when they need more or different than what I have.
