Today we’d like to introduce you to Shamere Young.
Hi Shamere, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was approaching high school graduation, I realized I wanted to work with others daily, but I didn’t know in what capacity. Even with multiple college offers, I didn’t go because I didn’t know what I wanted to do. So I joined the Army and got a viewpoint on nutrition, as I was a nutrition specialist for the Army. Working in this field showed me a lot, and upon my honorable discharge from the Army, I decided to continue to work in the nutrition field and find the area I liked. After working in several South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington D.C. hospitals, I moved into the weight loss industry, working for a few clinics. These industries opened my eyes to what I wanted to do with nutrition as I encountered many women, often struggling with weight loss or body image. So I started working with women as their health and wellness coach, helping them become their best selves. While working with others, I was also navigating forms of depression. I have PTSD from the Army. My time in Iraq was starting to impact me, and I learned I had post-partum depression after the birth of my last son.
During this same period, my husband and I started attending many social events, including balls/galas. We had this particular ball for which I wanted my makeup professionally done, so I booked an appointment. While the service was great, my makeup turned out horrible. The artist wasn’t confident about working with my skin complexion, which set me out on a mission to learn makeup on my own. So I was on a mission to help women with their health & wellness while I was on a mission to educate myself on beauty. I continued these two missions on the side over the years, working full-time in various health positions. I earned my nutrition degree and became a Reiki master, a makeup artist, and a SocaCize fitness instructor.
COVID then came, and so many changes happened. I left my state agency job full-time to focus on family and the one business I co-owned with my husband. During COVID, I also became known as a “beauty advisor” online because my followers and friends had me teaching various makeup classes. I used this time to expand into what I wanted to do for women. All my gifts intertwined into what I valued most helping women to look good and feel good about themselves. So instead of having different brand names like I did (one for makeup & one for wellness), I created one business entity, Shamere Young. Shamere Young’s brand covers two areas in helping women to look good & feel good; wellness & beauty. Both parts have products and services that help women become their best selves. In September 2022, beauty products were launched for the brand, which was very special and exciting.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, but I am still on it because I know this is a part of my life’s purpose. There is so much to learn about business, especially from being in the business part-time to going full-time. One of the biggest struggles has been funding. Great ideas need funding, and navigating the funding part without creating debt has been harder. Marketing beyond email and text messaging has also been tough because it falls into the funding part. So I use the live features on social media platforms to stay connected and reach new potential customers.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
One thing that makes me different is that I educate. I educate my customers & followers on how to use beauty products, including my own, and on health & wellness tips.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
As chipper/energetic as you often find me, I am not a morning person. I can get up early just fine, but I don’t “people” really early 🙂
