Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Elizabeth Beach.
Hi, Sarah Elizabeth. We appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Writing has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. It’s been cool to look back over the years and see the little seeds planted along the way. When I was younger, I would win writing awards and enter/win poetry contests. Teachers and professors were always impressed by my papers. It was exhilarating to write things at the last minute and see how good I could make it. Throughout my early twenties, a woman at my old church took me in and started to mentor me. She challenged and pushed me to be a better writer by offering me amazing opportunities. When COVID hit in 2020, my writing shifted a lot. I began to discover who I am as a writer. Instead of writing for schools, churches, and website blogs, I started writing for myself. The expression “When it rains, it pours” could not have been more true for me. All at once, I lost everything I cared about. It was in this valley that I found my voice, found myself, and found God. Though I had no idea, the journal I kept during this time became my first published book.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There has not been a single smooth part of my journey, unfortunately. Everything has been an uphill battle, with one obstacle after another. From wrestling with hurt inflicted by people I care about to dealing with my mental health and deconstructing, then reconstructing, my faith. I morbidly joke about how unpredictably predictable my life is with my friends. I am known for always having it challenging, internally and externally. I am not ready to share most of my story, but maybe soon. Another book?
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a poet and a painter, though writing has taken center stage in my life. My best-known piece of work at the moment would be my book, “Resurrecting the Butterfly Graveyard.” Sales are going pretty well. I recently got into my first bookstore! What sets me apart as a writer is the purpose of my work. I want to evoke emotion in people, to make them feel something. One of the most common comments about my book is that it made readers remember things in their own lives, thoughts they’ve had, and hardships they’ve endured. What makes me different is that I unite humanity through raw human emotion. We all come from different places, grow up differently, and see the world differently, but one thing that ties us all together is the pure emotion we all feel. I try to capture that in words, though I will never do it justice.
We’d like to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I do not believe in luck. If luck were real, the world would lack purpose and intentionality. I believe in something far greater than good or bad coincidences in life. I believe in a loving Creator who takes on the role of a Father for humanity (at least those who let Him be one), guiding and correcting people against the consequences of sin from free will and the sabotage of a (lesser) spiritual enemy. Nothing by chance has ever happened to me. The Lord has gifted me with the good and has redeemed the bad.
