Meet Nicole Holliday

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Holliday.

Hi Nicole, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always had a passion for the environment and loved the beach. When I moved to Charleston that love expanded and became a way of life.

I had always wanted to start my own creative business. I knew that the brand I wanted to create had to be environmentally/ethically friendly, fun to work on, and let me embrace my love for the outdoors.

Then the magic moment happened. A friend of mine introduced me to Turkish towels and I knew I had found what I had been looking for.

I could work with this.

I could make something beautiful and functional here, a piece of beach fashion that you could use as a medium to give back.

My vote for change in the world of business and product production.

I set out to find a way to create my vision with as little harm to the environment, or humans as possible.

Which included finding a small batch looming factory that still used the ancient traditions of shuttle looming.

I sourced organically grown premium Turkish cotton and sustainable dyes, and I would use zero plastics from start to finish.

What came of that was Dokulu. A sustainable beach towel brand that I feel good about standing behind.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a beautiful ride. There have defiantly been hiccups and bumps along the way. But I have the support of an amazing group of friends, and my fiancé who has always been my biggest cheerleader.

I have learned a lot. Starting a business and really getting honest about the standards you intend to uphold and the sacrifices you’re willing to take to make those standards a reality is no joke.

I have made my fair share of difficult decisions in the pursuit of this dream, but I wouldn’t change a thing.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have always wanted to do something in the world of art and design. I never really found my niche until I started Dokulu. I love fashion and home design but I didn’t feel drawn to it as a career path. I wanted something that would let me also be active and outdoors; designing bath/beach towels just felt right! I am so proud to be able to say I created all of the designs for Dokulu. It was truly a lifelong goal realized.

What are your plans for the future?
Moving forward I see more beach clean-ups, volunteer work, and a lot more sandy & sunny days. I would love to expand my line to contain more sustainable textiles such as blankets, beach bags, hats, and reef-safe beach products such as sunscreens, and lip balms. I want Dokulu to become a brand associated with style and sustainability, and good vibes all around.
