Meet Mister Davey Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mister Davey Jones.

Hi Mister Jones, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Charleston SC. I’ve always been a music lover from a very young age but it wasn’t until my high school years that I made my own. Jazz was first introduced to me by my father. We would listen to artists like Kenny G, Boney James, Marcus Miller, John Coltrane, etc. while we rode to and from Charleston. My uncle Jonesy lent me an old Alto Sax that I still have to this day and I began playing it in middle school band. I was never the greatest at it but it introduced me to a different side of music. Though I continued playing sax into my high school years, poetry and hip hop took the forefront of my heart’s creative side. I gravitated more to making hip hop at this point in my life but never lost respect and love for the jazz tunes my father introduced me to. During the college years, I began experimenting with not just writing songs but the production that accompanied the lyrics. Starting with beginner programs that created beats centered around loops I began to find more of my identity as an artist. For some time after that, I took a break from my creative pursuits to focus on life and establishing myself as an adult. After tinkering with music production again from 2018-2019, I decided in 2020 that I would create a company to release my own style of music that fuses both of my beloved genres together. Borrowing from both however not being 100% one or the other.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

I’m still in the starting phases however the road has not been extremely smooth nor bumpy. It’s been filled with as much bumps as thy typical South Carolina dirt road. I will say that starting a company in the midst of a pandemic has definitely had its unique hurdles. For a time, I could not go out and perform which was integral to promoting myself as an independent artist. Being able to capture people’s attention in this digital age is not a problem that’s tailored to me but it has definitely prompted me to be more creative in areas of advertising. A mixture of appropriate hashtags and placements in blogs have helped to boost my notoriety.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an independent recording artist and music producer. I specialize in musical composition and songwriting. I’m known for my original sound, blending jazz, Neo Soul, and hip-hop together to make something new. I’m most proud of my last music single and the buzz I was able to generate around it while being an independent artist. I find that my approach to music has set me apart from others who do something similar.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
The food has always been one my favorite things about Charleston. Everybody knows the best place to find a good plate of shrimp and grits is at grandma’s house. Our scenery has always been something I love as well. People come here to shoot movie scenes for a reason. It’s beautiful. As a native, I would say that what I like least has to be the increase in traffic due to a rise in new residents. It’s definitely become a nuisance to be out on the road at certain times of the day.
