Meet Marcus Owens of Port Royal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Owens.

Hi Marcus, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, my name is Marcus Owens, and I do freelance photography. I got my first camera back in 2019 and would take pictures of my brother doing random things or take photos of the scenery when my family was on the road and at family events. I never thought that I would fall in love with photography. It wasn’t serious until one of my close friends encouraged me to make a page for people to see my talent and work. So I started posting my work and handing out cards with my info to see my photos, and it went uphill from there as I started to gain exposure, and it turned into me bringing in income from it. I had some of my pictures posted on Zillow and other sites. I have experience with real estate, cars, sports, family events, portraits, and street photography. So far, I’ve traveled to a few places out of my home state to shoot, so I’m looking forward to seeing the world. It’s been exciting to be on this journey and to see how far it will take me. They say life is what you make, but with God, you can get through it, which keeps me going. I plan on making this my career full-time and want to see what other opportunities open up for me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are struggles in anything, but photography it’s different because it’s constantly changing. As far as challenges, there are more inner challenges within me. Being confident in my work was one of the things I needed to work on most because I’m my biggest critic. If something doesn’t look right, I get so hard on myself, but I have to remember that nothing in life is perfect, but I always give my best, especially concerning my craft. Reaching out to some of the best of the best photographers also helped me because they’ve gone through the same thing, and some still think the same thoughts I have. I have to keep learning along the way, praying and believing that one day this will be my career full time and I will succeed while I take on challenges and adversities head-on.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a visual artist. I’ve always had an eye for art in any way. I specialize in street photography and portraits, and I’m proud of myself for taking the risk and doing this one thing I’m passionate about. What makes me different is that I don’t have the best equipment, but I know how to work with what I have, and I’m thankful for that. Regarding what I do and getting deeper into that, there’s no limit to what and who I take pictures of. As I’ve said before, I specialize in street and portrait photography. Still, I always tell my clients or newcomers, “whatever you need, I will deliver” because I want to expand my range in this business and not be limited to one specific style of photography, so I’m here for all of it! My main focus in preparation for shoots is genuinely getting to know who I’m taking pictures of so I can set them up in the most comfortable atmosphere possible. It helps the shoots go way smoother and builds that relationship between the photographer and client so that when it comes time for pictures, they’re at their best, and so am I.
