Meet Maggie Cooper of Cooper’s Realty Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Cooper.

Maggie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My real estate journey began in 2005. At this time, I was 23 years old with two little boys. My mom talked to me about getting my real estate license. I research more on being a real estate agent and I thought it was a great career. I looked into finding a class that was available. I decided to go with a course that was offered at Florence Darlington Technology College. I successfully completed the course. Once completed, I had a year to take the state board exam. I waited until that year was about up to schedule my first state board exam. I took a week off from my current job to dig back into the notes and material that was given. I successfully passed both the federal and state parts of the real estate state board exam. I interview a few brokerages, which I thought would be a great fit. I really loved Mrs. Ann King’s office. She was with Century 21 at that time but I just thought they were just too big for me. So, I went for a smaller brokerage called the Crawford Group as a part-time agent as I continue to work my full-time position at Blue Cross & Blue Shield. It was a great small environment. They taught me a lot and provided a great learning experience. However, I didn’t have the right mindset. I looked at being a real estate agent as being a salesman and hated any position that had to do with being a salesman. This led me to not be successful. I sold a total of 3 properties but they were with close friends and family. I didn’t advertise or market myself. I did not try to take my business to the next level. That next year I decided not to renew my real estate license.

I continued to work my job with Blue Cross & Blue Shield until I landed a new position with JP Morgan Chase in Florence, SC doing back-office mortgage audits & processing. I worked there for several years until I took another new position at Caliber Homes still doing back-off mortgage processing & auditing. During this time frame, I was back in college as well. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and my Master’s Degree in Human Resources Management. I tried to get several jobs in those fields but all of them would have been a pay cut. I knew I didn’t see a future at my current job. I truly needed to figure out my next move. I started researching & working on myself. I watch several youtube videos on mindset and what successful people do. I knew I had to get my mindset right first to accomplish the life and dreams that I wanted. If I do my part, God would take care of the rest!!

During this time I remembered a few family members telling me that I should have stayed in Real Estate but I would brush it off. I would always pray for God to show me what was meant for me. One weekend I was at my mom’s house and she pulled me to the side to discuss my future. During that conversation, she also talked about me going back into real estate. After our talk I told her if the opportunity came up where I could find a school that would work with my work schedule, I would go for it.

By this time I’m 37 years old with 4 children. I did some research for a great real estate school.  I found Pinnacle Academy in Myrtle Beach, SC which offered a Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday class which worked perfectly with my current work schedule.  I started classes on February 1st, 2019 in my Pre-Licensing class. It was a lot of information while working a full-time job and having children but I buckled down. I studied on my breaks at work and after work every day. I successfully completed the course and passed the classroom test. On March 2nd, I started the Advanced Licensing class and successfully finished that course. Next, I processed my background check and interviewed a few brokerages. However, I knew what brokerage I was going with. I found Mrs. Ann King again. She was a broker with United Real Estate at this time. Once I passed my state boards I placed my license with her brokerage.

My plans were to work my full-time job and do real estate part-time. But God had a different plan. I told my manager that I was a licensed agent and she advised me that it was a conflict of interest. I would have to deactivate my real estate license to keep my current position or if I kept it active, I would be fired immediately!! I was so devastated!!  I never saw this coming!! My current position that I was in at the time was processing renovation loans that had already closed. I didn’t see how having my real estate license would be a conflict of interest. I called my mom, cried, and prayed about it. I worked too hard to sit on my license but I was so afraid of being fired. I had 4 children that depended on me.  I was scared and nervous, but I knew it was definitely time for a change!! I decided to take a leap of faith with God, my mom, and my family by my side every step of the way. I kept my license active and the next day they kept their word & I was fired.

I trusted the process and started as a full-time real estate agent on June 2019 with United Real Estate. I started learning and training.  I was blessed with an amazing mentor Ms. Melissa Floyd who took me under her wings. She really gave me the foundation that helped me to leverage my business and to be as successful as I am today. She is still my real estate sissy and a great friend today!! My real estate business has flourished!! I have been blessed to help several amazing families & individuals accomplish their home ownership goals and others accomplish their real estate goals in selling and investing in real estate. I truly can say that I love what I do!!

I’m so happy I took the leap of faith!! I’m so blessed to be able to help individuals accomplish their real estate goals!!  I would like to thank all my past and future clients for trusting me to get the job done!! I love you all!! I love keeping my clients happy. I’m taking my business to the next level and I’m excited about the future!! I’m ready to continue to help more families and individuals with their real estate goals.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. When you first receive your license, there still is so much more to learn. The courses don’t teach you how to successfully run your real estate business. Learning and coming up with your own style has been a lot but I wouldn’t change it. It has helped me become the successful agent I am today!!

The challenges, obstacles, and failures are always a blessing in disguise. These are always a lesson!! Learn from them, readjust and keep plugging away into your business.
