Meet Lori Winkler and Farrah Follmann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Winkler and Farrah Follmann.

Hi Lori and Farrah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Prior to launching The Roost, we’d been friends for some time as our daughters went to the same school and we’d been neighbors and workout buddies. It was during the pandemic when we were getting together for our quarantine garage workouts, that we felt this pull to create something together that would be uplifting to ourselves and to others. We were also looking for an outlet to explore our shared passions for interior design, entertaining, books, wellness, and more. The Roost is a digital lifestyle magazine dedicated to the pursuit of joyful living. Covid reinforced the notion that we’ve got to deliberately choose to cultivate joy on a daily basis, especially during times of uncertainty and chaos. It also reminded us that joyful living begins at home. We were thrilled to launch our website (theroostview.com) this past October, and recently expanded to include a new podcast and video series called, “Open Book” where we sit down for candid conversations with admirable women who inspire us to live our best, most joyful lives. We’ve got big dreams for this little passion project of ours, but ultimately, it’s about connecting with like-minded women who have also decided to pursue more joy.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting something new, especially at this stage in our lives, is never easy. We’ve got the vision and know where we are taking The Roost, but the reality is we are new to this industry. Neither one of us is someone who loves social media, yet it is a critical aspect to this business we’re building. Talk about a paradox! Thankfully we both do love to learn new things. We are enjoying ourselves and having fun while we stumble forward and figure things out. But every single day comes with challenges when you’re working on something brand new. It’s constantly being outside of your comfort zone and pushing past insecurity and doubt. Moira Kucaba, the first woman that Lori interviewed for our new Open Book series, said something that we keep going back to: joy comes from progress, not perfection. We keep reminding ourselves of that!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in creating inspiring digital content focused on the pursuit of joyful living. We are two girl moms in our forties who have realized the need to cultivate little habits each day that bring about happiness and fulfillment. We’re joy-seekers on a journey to inspire others (and ourselves) to live joyfully and in the moment. We don’t believe in chasing perfection and instead, choose grace. Both of us love mixing up a cocktail, throwing on a party dress, setting a pretty table, and entertaining. Maybe it’s because we’re Geminis, but we could just as easily enjoy the perfect night staying in pajamas with a cup of tea and a good book. We would never even pretend to have all the answers, but we are committed to sharing our experiences and perspectives with The Roost. We’re so excited about our new Open Book series as it gives us the opportunity to introduce our audience to the admirable women who inspire us to live our best, most joyful lives.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
We had a deep conversation about success the other day and came to the conclusion that living joyfully is success. You can have all the fame, fortune, and business “success” to be had. But if it’s not bringing you joy, is it really success? We don’t think so. The good news is that living joyfully is a choice, and we each get to make it, regardless of our circumstances. Personally, we believe success and living joyfully comes down to having purpose and making strides towards fulfilling that purpose.
