Meet Lauren Winchester of Greer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Winchester.

Hi Lauren, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
All of my worlds collided as I finally found my dream career in photography. I have always been open to what I was supposed to do next, leaning into my passions and strengths. In my previous years, I held positions in advertising, event planning, and hospitality and taught every early childhood grade level.

Photography was always my main hobby and interest; I was a family historian my whole life, keeping organized yearly photos on my computer ever since the birth of digital cameras. I found it joy and a necessity to have these memories stored. My husband, Chris, has always been a proponent of my creativity and goals, so he surprised me with an afternoon where I met with a local photographer for a one-on-one class. Through her encouragement and teaching, I was inspired to take better photos of my children. From there, something ignited within me. I became vulnerable in sharing that I dreamed of launching a photography business. Through careful encouragement, I slowly (and very humbly) began my business, taking photos of families. New session types came up, and I soon found myself shooting my first in-home newborn for my precious friend, Ashton Hantjis. I remember vividly feeling a spark and a passion that day that was so new, refreshing, and exciting. I grew in my craft by practicing and trying new things that scared me, and I kept putting myself out there.

Fast forward to over 4 years later, and I have a brand with a mission, repeat clients, and a job that I adore. I constantly have visions for the future and what growth will look like in the coming years. I have been honored to follow families from maternity to major milestones as I witness their children and families grow. Providing a visual representation of memories and time is an immense responsibility that I am thankful for every day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I mentioned, starting a business is humbling. In the first days after deciding to begin my own business, I attended an event for local creatives. We gathered together for an evening to share personal stories and resources. On my name tag, as I checked in, I remember writing “Lauren Winchester” with “photographer” underneath as I was instructed. At that moment, a pit in my stomach and imposter syndrome settled in. My internal narrative included so many doubts, fears, and insecurities, but I didn’t let it stop me from asking other creatives all the questions that night. In that humbling moment, I realized that if I wanted this to work, I had to fight for it. All the other women in the room had started somewhere, too. They had all certainly felt those start-up anxieties as well. And, surely, as I got to know them, I realized they were more like me than different. When you own your own business, you wear all the hats. I am the photographer, but I’m also the marketing director, finance manager, administrative assistant, social media guru, equipment manager, set up and clean up crew, and everything in between. It can often feel as if you’re working in a silo, alone in all the decision-making, as an entrepreneur. I have learned to outsource, ask for help, and continually educate myself.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a photographer specializing in classic Portraits, Maternity and In-Home newborns, Families, and Headshots. My editing style is timeless, bright, and light, with true-to-life color. Having experience as an au pair out of college, a teacher for all grade levels from K4 to 3rd grade, and working with children as a mom of two is second nature. I am understanding and flexible and know the importance of connecting to the family and your child before the shutter starts clicking. Genuine, real expression motivates a parent to publish those final images or hang them on the walls at home, so we start with play and warm up to the goal of getting that perfect shot.

Working with families through the years and establishing real relationships mean the world. It is a gift and distinct privilege to be asked to keep coming back for the next big milestone or life moment. My bottom line is always my client relationships; I see each as part of my photography family once I have been invited in for a session. In fact, as a 2 on the Enneagram (nurturer) and an extrovert, I make myself at home quickly. We will have lots of real conversation, but I’ll also dive right into fixing those hairs that fall in your face or turning down a collar during a session. I have distinct compassion for new moms and love meeting them where they are. I appreciate and cheer on all children, but there is a special place in my heart for those with disabilities. I love knowing how families come together and will always champion adoption and fostering. I care deeply for others and pray for every session and the people I will work with. I pray for the babies, parents, and the Lord to give and renew my creativity. I do not take these chances for granted.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
We are not meant to do this life alone. I will always shout to the rooftops about the power of community. My husband is my number one supporter, and if it weren’t for his encouragement, I would not be a full-time photographer. My parents, in-laws, and siblings have cheered me on through the kindest words and by taking care of my children on session days. My best friend, Katie Harrison, has provided countless opportunities to help me grow, talk through ideas, and tell others about my business. Heather Young was my “fairy godmother,” especially in the early stages of business, helping make connections and hiring me for events to utilize my skills. Friends Helen Mitchell, Katie Turner, and Christen Sellier heard my first mention and dreams of starting my own business; they responded with a resounding “yes” and the essential words, “you can.” Lucy Zeiger and Sarah Tate worked with me to establish a brand, create my website, and provide all graphic design needs. Courtney Malone was my mentor and fellow photographer, who taught me manual mode and inspired me to become the photographer I am today. More than anyone, however, God brought me through all these stages and seasons of life, slowly building essential skills and the ability to recognize passions and make moves. God gave me and all of us the ability to create as we are all living and breathing reflections of Him. Without God’s unique design for my life and all of the shapes and varying sizes of stepping stones that led me down this path, I certainly would not be where I am today.
