Meet Latoya Hagood of St. Helena Island

Today we’d like to introduce you to Latoya Hagood.

Latoya Hagood

Hi Latoya, We are so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2017, my husband and I signed up for an artisan soap-making class. We learned the art of cold-process soap making and even made our batch of soap. After our soap cured for 4 weeks, we began using our handmade product and fell in love. We immediately switched from commercial bath and body products to our own handmade, plant-based soaps, bath, and body products. The days of dry, irritated skin were gone. In 2019, my husband and I formed Lovin’ My Skin, LLC, a natural, plant-based soap, bath, and body company.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When my husband and I started Lovin’ My Skin, we lacked the knowledge and understanding of what it took to be business owners. I recently completed a business class called Black Equity University. This class is offered by BlacQuitySC, a nonprofit organization that elevates, empowers, and promotes black-owned businesses in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. I learned everything from personal budgeting to business finance, licensing, product pricing, bookkeeping, marketing and sales, and entrepreneurship well-being.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a Registered Nurse, I desire natural, health-promoting self-care products. In 2019, my husband and I formed Lovin’ My Skin, LLC. We handcraft natural, plant-based soaps, baths, and body products. We’ve found the perfect combination of oils, butter, and milk to create a bar of soap that produces a smooth, creamy, luxurious lather. Our soaps are nourishing, balanced skin pH, anti-aging, suitable for all skin types and ages, and eco-friendly. At Lovin’ My Skin, our motto is “skin care is healthcare.” The Lovin’ My Skin brand is like no other. Our soaps are fun, creative, colorful, and artistic. Our products are made in small batches in the Lowcountry of St. Helena Island, South Carolina.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share?
The COVID-19 pandemic changed everything we knew about the world. It forced many businesses to get creative and think of new ways to survive and be profitable. Many new businesses were started amidst the pandemic, including ours. Businesses began focusing on work-life balance while trying to remain healthy and safe.
