Today we’d like to introduce you to LaToshia Waters.
Hi LaToshia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
During my early years of college, I accepted a Summer Internship to work as a Forrest Ranger at Carl Sandburg National Historical Park in Flat Rock, NC. Beyond selling books & giving tours, I was in charge of the youth program where I worked with the Boys and Girls Club, located in Hendersonville, NC, only 15 minutes from Carl Sandburg’s. I worked with the youth (7-12yrs old) twice a week to prepare them for a big performance, a skit on every Summer of Carl Sandburg’s famous rutabaga stories! This assignment was not easy, but I was ready for the challenge, and so were the kids! We had only three weeks to prepare, but It turned out to be a successful show. Eventually, the Summer came to an end, & I returned to Blue Ridge Community College and graduated shortly after.
My career went from retail to banking, business communication, to accounts receivables and payables. I continued drifting until 2019. I had difficulty deciding which avenue would allow more one-to-one interaction. As I was home sitting at my computer desk thinking about which new career path to take, the word “Fitness” came strong into my spirit. At that moment, It became clear why I bounced from job to job. God spoke to me and revealed that my purpose would be through fitness. It took a year to become a certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor.
To God be the glory! An opportunity to work as a fitness instructor was given by Gary Painter, owner of Inman Health and Fitness Gym, located in Inman, SC. He believed in my abilities and allowed me to teach in 2020. I am now a partner with Hosea Scurry, the owner of Tone Avenue, located inside Spartanburg Westgate Mall in SC. I provide Personal Training and teach classes on Monday & Thursday while volunteering fitness three times a week to the elderly and community.
Generating fitness profits through different avenues of instruction has become a more profound love than I ever thought possible. Although challenging, I remain confident and continue to trust this process.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As COVID-19 rolled into our local county, sponsorship consistency has been challenging. Due to hardships, cutbacks for funding the elderly fitness programs throughout our community have been the most severe. Some individuals take things for granted, such as social interaction, games to stimulate their memory, improve balance, and strength training exercises. To make a difference in our senior community, Implementing dedicated routines is essential. I hope that more caring hearts will step forward to assist with sponsorships. Age Up Cardio has a partnered sponsor who makes scarves for our Silverbells (elderly). The scarves are given out each year during the Fall and Winter months. Knowing that generations will benefit from our journey keeps us going!
As you know, we’re big fans of AgeUp Cardio. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

Goals
It would be a dream to eventually start Age Up Cardio 2, a nonprofit organization. My long-term goal is to recruit passionate and servant-minded individuals. Through Age Up Cardio 2, I’ll bring onboard college students, graduates, and professionals who love what they do! A second Age Up Cardio would benefit not just the staff but the elderly, veterans, and nonmobile population.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I loved art, music, cooking, and dance. Additionally, I found people fascinating. My grandmother and mother exposed me to Soup Kitchens and Homeless Shelters, so most of my conversations were with strangers, and I enjoyed listening to their stories. Giving to the community has always been a family tradition, so it was no surprise when I became a member of the Salvation Army leadership program. Wearing my red vest and earning badges through serving the community made me proud. Servant leadership has always been a significant part of life, and I strive to pass these values to future generations. The purpose of my existence is to engage and bring life to dark spots in people’s lives. I discovered poetry was a talent I picked up from my mom. Writing became an outlet for me in my teenage years. I began keeping journeys and started writing stories for English assignments in school. In response to my English teacher’s encouragement, I entered writing contests; however, after winning a few, I became more self-conscious and ceased sharing my work. Although my mother is a phenomenal writer, I remember asking, “why do you not write down all your poems.” Taking a moment to point to her mind and heart, she responded, “because I keep it here.” Retrospectively, I understand her point. My own, if you will. Previously, I shared, but not anymore. It is not always possible to find every treasure.
