Hi Lakesha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
As a Doula and now Published Author, I offer emotional support, physical comfort, and advocacy to help families navigate the beautiful but sometimes challenging childbirth experience. I believe in the power of a woman’s body and the strength of being surrounded by a caring and knowledgeable support system. My goal is to ensure that every birthing mother feels heard, respected, and empowered to make informed decisions about her own body and her baby’s birth. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such a particular time in families’ lives and look forward to continuing to provide compassionate care through SunFlower Births. I also created a journal for moms to assist and help guide them through their pregnancy journey and postpartum stage: Bloom, Baby, Bloom! We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting and growing a Doula business, especially during a global pandemic, has been a testament to my resilience and adaptability. It has definitely presented its challenges, one of the main struggles being adapting to virtual support and consultations when in-person meetings were not possible due to lockdown restrictions. Building trust and connection with clients remotely was a new experience that required additional effort and creativity. Another challenge was navigating the ever-changing guidelines and restrictions surrounding childbirth during the pandemic. This meant staying updated on the latest information and adapting my services to ensure the safety and well-being of both families and myself. Additionally, like any small business owner, there were administrative tasks, marketing efforts, and financial considerations that required careful attention and time management. Balancing the demands of running a business and providing high-quality care to families was a significant juggling act at times, but one that I was committed to mastering. Despite these challenges, I am grateful for the opportunity to continue supporting families through SunFlower Births and am constantly learning and growing from the experiences along the way.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was the family functions when everyone made time for fun. We would gather at my grandparents’ house, with aunts, uncles, cousins, and even family friends joining the festivities. The air was filled with laughter and chatter as we played games, shared stories, and enjoyed delicious homemade meals. I remember the warm embrace of loved ones, the music filling the air, and the sense of belonging that enveloped me. Those family functions were a time of joy, connection, and togetherness that I will always treasure. They were a reminder of the importance of family and the power of creating lasting memories with those we hold dear.
