Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Reynolds.
Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Charlotte, NC, but after attending Clemson for my undergraduate degree fell in love with Upstate SC and, after grad school, ended up back in the Greenville area. I grew up spending time making candy in my Great Aunts smock (sewing) shop and around her kitchen table. This has had a big influence on my artistic process.
You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
Putting myself out there daily is the hardest part of being an artist. Professionally the most challenging part has been comparing my successes to others’ seemingly more successful art businesses. Everything I do represents my business, and I’m naturally a more reserved and quiet person, so I struggle with this. I also keep much of my personal life, past and present, off social media and out of focus in my art because my goal as an artist is to bring joy and smiles to my collectors and those who view my art.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
This original work focuses on kitchen still life, such as fruit and flowers. I paint on glass, and as it dries, I cut the pieces of paint off the glass and collage them onto birch panels. Think giant fruit roll-up. This unique process lets me explore color, light, and texture. I also design kitchen goods like dish towels and seasonal items like ceramic Christmas trees, Easter eggs, and pumpkins. These are all brightly colored and a fun addition to spaces.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite memory might be my most embarrassing as well! I was a cheerleader my entire life through college. Sometime in early high school, we ran across the away school field to catch the bus with our football team. When we got to the fence, it was locked, and everyone started to hop on over. I’m short! And as I climbed up, my shoelace got stuck, and I toppled over the fence. I was hanging upside, giggling so hard it took some time for someone to help untangle me and get me safely back to my feet.
