Meet Jessica Resch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Resch.

Hi Jessica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I guess you could say my passion for sewing began when I was a little girl making clothes for my barbie dolls! Professionally, I started sewing out of my home for just friends and family about 30 years ago. Between sewing from home and working as an in-house seamstress for Berlins in Downtown Charleston, this little side hustle eventually turned into a full-time business! As I continued to advance my skills and grow my client list I opened my first shop, A Stitch In Time, where I took alterations for all garments but especially evening wear and bridal. During this time, I traveled to San Francisco for a Couture Sewing School program and that’s when I decided that I wanted to build my business around formal wear and bridal only.

I closed A Stitch in Time to take a short break and spend more time with my family. When I was ready, I opened Charleston Alt. and took only specialized alterations and custom design orders. After a few years, I realized my true passion is designing and sewing one-of-a-kind designs. I decided to re-brand and open my doors again as Jessica Resch Couture. Now, I work alongside my daughter and I am able to design and create unique top-of-the-line formal wear for women.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road but I am blessed to have not encountered anything threatening. My biggest challenge was earlier in my career when I couldn’t find mentors for this trade. Sewing is a dying art and there aren’t many seamstresses around. That only drove me to lean on myself more but I am happy that I have. It is also has given me great insight to the dress-making process. As a seamstress, I know exactly how I would want to see a piece of clothing constructed so that it is easier to alter.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well, I am a fashion designer! Which is a little crazy to say out loud. I still can’t believe I have my own design studio and my own line of couture dresses. But I design and sew from hand one-of-a-kind couture gowns for women. I specialize in Mother of the Bride + Grooms and that makes up over 80% of my customer base! I am known for my craftsmanship and my passion for using top-of-the-line materials. I carry Italian silks, French brocades and so much more.

I hand make each dress to my customers’ specifications which sets us apart from other brands. When you order from us it’s not actually just a size 6 or size 8 but I take all of your measurements and sew your dress so that it is the perfect fit. I also offer free alterations for any of my Jessica Resch Couture customers who are willing to come into my studio in Downtown Charleston.

In fact, the process of shopping with us sets us apart. You can schedule a private shopping experience to come to my studio and try on samples of all of our designs or talk custom dresses. I walk you through the process and am at your side when choosing what you want to wear for your special occasion.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I feel ‘lucky’ that I have been able to pursue my passion. But as from many years in this industry and multiple businesses under my belt I can tell you ‘luck’ is the fruit of your hard work. It is more about the opportunities that have come from the effort I have put in and that is a reflection of what we have built today.
