Meet Jeff Pitts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Pitts.

Hi Jeff, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I had been playing in a band (or two) for over a decade and was looking for something new. Through a chance meeting, I met Jessica Skinner Sims when I was sitting in on guitar with a friend. Jessica and myself became fast friends and started jamming together. Prettier Than Matt was born. Before too long, we were doing all the open mics we could find. After a couple months, we started playing for money, and writing songs and now we sit here a decade later still working. And often. We are going to record our 9th release this year and the shows keep coming.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, considering the band stories I’ve heard, yes! When it comes to being a true “job” and one that paid the bills, that took time, but the build to that was smooth, with the only real snags being a couple crazy tour stories involving situations with strangers we could never predict. We’ve both had real-life situations take place, both with ups and downs, but the musical aspect and our business never really suffered from it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Prettier Than Matt is a musical duo featuring Jessica Skinner Sims on vocals and ukulele and me, Jeff Pitts, on guitar and vocals. We’ve kicked the pavement playing mostly cover songs, but we also have always played original music and we record and release something each year. We’ve toured the country multiple times and have always been fairly regional with our live show selection. We consider our genre Americana Pop, but it’s hard to choose your own genre sometimes. 🙂

We’ve had 5 songs featured on television shows like The Bachelorette and Temptation Island and many of our goals involve expanding our placement on television, movies, and videos games.

We also spend quite a bit of time live-streaming music on Twitch. There are so many ways to get yourself out there these days.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Don’t fear technology and change. We already played our music on the internet prior to Covid, but when it hit, we were so grateful we had a head start. It kept us afloat the entire time and we are forever grateful for all that helped make that happen.
