Meet Fairoozan Abdullah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fairoozan Abdullah.

Hi Fairoozan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My artistic talents started from a young age and then developed during the study period, as I received support from the school and my family. During my university studies in the field of art, I received a lot of encouragement from my professors at the university to pursue the profession of drawing. Including to my talent in art, I finish 4 years bachelor’s degree in art from Baghdad university of art. also my former job as an art teacher and interaction with students for many years helped me improve my art skill

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Because of the security situation and the war in my country (Iraq), I had to leave the country and move between many countries and this affected me and my art greatly. Before I have a chance to settle in America – South Carolina. The biggest struggle for me was when I lost my biggest supporter (my husband) and took full responsibility for taking care of my children, especially my autistic son, and making the time to make artwork.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have been interested in various forms of papercraft since my school years, it took me quite a while to find my own way of bringing together my love of paper with my experience in painting. I have actually discovered a new way of using the basic paper technique as I am drawing with paper instead of on it, at that time point I had no idea it was called (Paper Quilling) and I made the quilling process interesting and modern.

These paper artworks can take from a few days to a few weeks or even longer – it all depends on the level of detail, size, and design, the largest paper artwork I ever made took me around 6 weeks. Before starting to design a painting, I draw the subject that aims at a specific idea with acrylic colors, then start sticking papers on the artboard as if I am drawing with papers, showing shadow and light by laying down the papers in different directions on the artboard. I touched on many topics in my paintings, from portraits, inanimate objects, passion, love, and animal images, to contemporary paintings.

Before I start my thoughts are clashing when choosing a specific topic to begin designing a painting. In the beginning, I focus on the emotional aspect, then I turn it into a realistic style and add an abstract style to it. And chose colors derived from nature and life on the seas. This may take between one to two weeks.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
They can work with me by sharing ideas and artwork topics with me and Collaborating with frame makers to create frames that fit my paintings. Collaborating with artists to conduct joint art exhibitions. Provide me the opportunity to display my paintings at art galleries. Find support to open an art gallery. Help with marketing and social media.
