Meet Elizabeth Corbett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Corbett.

Hi Elizabeth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am originally from Camden, SC but currently reside in Virginia Beach, VA. My life experiences led me to write a book of poetry that tells my story.

Throughout my life, I experienced so much trauma, from childhood trauma, military sexual trauma, miscarriage, domestic violence in my marriage, and divorce. I was not properly taking care of my mental health. At that time, my only therapy was writing poetry. Writing had become my passion and it was a way to metaphorically express the feelings that I kept inside. I always wanted to share my story but did not know how. One night, I was hanging out with my friend and mentioned my idea of wanting to write a book. My friend told me that there was someone that could possibly help me with the process. I really did not think anything of the conversation after that night. Within a few days, I received a text from my friend giving contact information for this person that could help. I spoke with them and they told me to try self-publishing. After that, I started working on my manuscript of poems, then sent my work to get copyrighted. After I received my copyright, I began working on my book. I started working on my book at the end of my spring semester of school. I was focused on getting my book done during my summer break. Within 3 months, I had my first book self-published. My book was published at the end of July. My book, Thoughts of an Unspoken Mind, is currently available on Amazon in 2 formats, paperback and Kindle, and online at Barnes & Noble in 2 formats, paperback and Nook.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road of self-publishing a book was not smooth at all. The biggest challenge I had to overcome during this process was the mental struggle. There were many times that I doubted myself and my abilities. I was very hesitant about sharing my story because I did not know how people would receive it. I procrastinated for about a week or so before submitting my book for publishing.

Another struggle was formatting the book. I was really about to give up. My kids would encourage me to keep going. I’m so thankful that I did.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently working at a mental health clinic as an administrative technician. I love that my job gives me the experience that I will need for the career I am pursuing. I am also a college student. My hope is to become a counselor because I have a passion for helping people. I am proud of my accomplishments, especially with completing my first book. There were many days I wanted to give up on life. I believe what sets me apart from others is my creative mind.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Time matters to me.

“Time is precious.
Once it’s lost, it’s something we’ll never get back.
Time doesn’t belong to us,
It flows freely…
Life is measured by the quality of it,
Not the quantity.” Excerpt from one of my poems titled “Time”

Time spent in growing my relationship with God matters the most to me.
Time spent with my children matters to me. My family, friends, supporters, and encouragers matters to me. And, I cannot forget my therapist! For they have in somehow, in someway, helped me along this journey.
Fulfilling my purpose in this life matters to me.
Being able to help others not experience what I experienced in my life matters to me.
