Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorlisa Adams. They and their team shared their story with us below:
In 2014, Visions of Women (V.O.W.) arose from Mrs. Dorlisa Adams’s experiences walking to her dorm room and being called by God to start a women’s support group and offer resources to help women going through unhealthy relationships. While continuing to pursue education in Sociology, Mrs. Adams began volunteering in Domestic Violence and homeless shelters and seeing the prevalence of unhealthy relationships and their negative impact on students in college. During her time at school, it became apparent that she and young women were not educated on advocating for themselves, nor were they aware of the cycles of abuse or how to break them. As such, Mrs. Adams developed a women’s group to provide a safe space for women to learn about and discuss healthy relationships, domestic violence, mental health, sexual assault, and their autonomy. This group expanded to become a prominent activist group on campus-spearheading educational campaigns and outreach on domestic violence, sexual assault, and services available in the community for those experiencing unhealthy relationships.
VOW garnered 501(c)(3) status in 2018 and continues serving on South Carolina college campuses. The purpose of VOW being on college campuses is to continue to educate, support, and lead on campus and in the community by raising awareness towards domestic violence and keeping domestic violence a discussion so that all students feel safe and supported. VOW has broadened its goal in the community off campus by providing circle groups, mental health counseling services, teen healthy relationship talks, educational outreach, and launching donation drives to secure funds and in-kind donations for back-to-school supplies, food, hygiene products, professional clothing, educational costs, and more for survivors at schools, churches, community-based organizations, and shelters.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Supporting college students who’ve faced gender-based violence brings its share of challenges for our nonprofit. Dealing with campus procedures can be challenging, but we find strength in being honest about the issues and advocating smartly for change. Getting enough funding to keep and grow our services is a big struggle. Breaking the silence around interpersonal violence isn’t easy either, given the stigma attached to it. Dealing with legal and ethical rules adds another layer of complexity to our work. Working with other groups is crucial, but building and keeping those relationships is not always easy. And at the core, we’re committed to tackling the deeper issues that cause gender-based violence, which means speaking up and pushing for change on a bigger scale. Despite the hurdles, we’re determined to create a world where college survivors can find the support they need.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. Please tell us more about your business or organization. What should we know?
A student leader at a college or university in South Carolina can initiate a Visions of Women (V.O.W.) support group on their campus, aiming to raise awareness about domestic violence and foster healthy relationships. Establishing a V.O.W. support group can catalyze starting conversations on campus and providing resources to students experiencing unhealthy relationships or knowing someone who is. Previously, V.O.W. leaders have actively participated in campus Title IX initiatives and have achieved recognition, including awards such as Student Group of the Year for 2021-2022 and Educational Event of the Year in 2023.
What do you do, what do you specialize in / what are you known for?
I’ve dedicated the past decade of my career to the nonprofit sector, initially starting with extensive volunteering. Through these experiences, I discovered my passion; from there, my career gained momentum. I attribute my success to my commitment to continuous learning and seize every opportunity to champion our organization’s mission and vision. My expertise lies in founding nonprofits, developing impactful branding strategies, securing grants, fostering strong leadership, and bridging rural communities with essential resources. I have a genuine affection for the community and am recognized as a steadfast advocate for driving positive change.
What sets you apart from others?
My unwavering commitment to my principles distinguishes me as a God-fearing woman. This foundation has provided me with opportunities to advocate for and support women and teens who are enduring abusive relationships. My faith guides me in every aspect of my work, enabling me to approach challenges with compassion, resilience, and a steadfast dedication to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those I serve.
What are you most proud of brand-wise?
I’m most proud of, brand-wise, witnessing the tangible impact that Visions of Women has had on the lives of countless students. Hearing directly from individuals who have shared how our organization has equipped them with the knowledge and resources to recognize and prevent intimate partner abuse is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that we’ve empowered students to foster healthy relationships and provide support to friends and family members, even beyond campus borders, fills me with immense pride and reinforces the significance of our mission. We are doing the work. I want our readers to know that Visions of Women is deeply committed to raising awareness and supporting individuals affected by interpersonal violence. As we enter various awareness months throughout the year—February for teen dating violence awareness, March for Women’s History Month, April for sexual assault awareness (victims’ rights awareness week), and October for domestic violence awareness—we invite you to follow us to stay informed about our initiatives and events. Whether through learning sessions, educational workshops, or community outreach efforts, numerous opportunities exist to volunteer with us and make a tangible difference. Join us in our mission to empower individuals, educate communities, and advocate for positive change. Together, we can create safer and healthier environments.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is all I spent with my Grandmother, Mamie Devine. I always saw her work so hard. The greatest thing she left me was her prayers. She was always positive, never complained, and was a bright light. I remember that one day I told her I wished money grew on trees, and she responded in such a way that until this day, I don’t have a hunger for money but purpose in life. And my purpose in life is what drives me in my family, community, and church.
