Meet Delores Curry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Delores Curry.

Hi Delores, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I always dreamed of becoming a woman who could improve the world. I didn’t have any purpose or direction for my life until 2016. I began working at McDonald’s as a cashier, and after a few months, I was promoted to shift manager. When I became a manager, I used the tuition assistance program that McDonald’s offers to obtain my paralegal degree from Bryant & Stratton College. After being unable to find an internship or a job as a paralegal in Arkansas, I began my career in healthcare administration. Starting as an ER registration clerk, working in patient access and surgery scheduling, and eventually ending up as a medical biller was a true challenge that I’m grateful for. I’m almost finished with the Healthcare Administration- medical coding program at Guilford Technical Community College. I also am a hairstylist & wig maker.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
2019 was very challenging for our family because we had a high-risk pregnancy with our daughter Duchess. Thanks to the diligence (and excellent vision) of my sonographer, Janzy Lucas Cobb, and the expertise of my OB/GYN, Dr. Kelly Shrum, we determined that I had an ultra-rare pregnancy complication called a chorioangioma. A chorioangioma is a placenta tumor that affects about 1% of pregnancies. After weekly visits to a specialist, I took a leave of absence from work & we had to deliver her via C-section at 37 weeks because she stopped gaining weight in my womb. 3 years later, Duchess is a vibrant and loving little princess who loves the beach, gymnastics, being outdoors, and singing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I’ve been making wigs & posting wig installation tutorials for a few years. In the beginning, I would post content sporadically. Still, I began maintaining a more consistent social media presence in 2022 when I noticed how underrepresented plus-size women are today. Whether it is hair, fashion, nails, etc., I wanted to show other plus-size women that it’s more than okay to own your confidence & to let the world be your runway!

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I learned just how serious COVID-19 was when it presented itself in my household, and it is an experience I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
