Today we’d like to introduce you to Cam Brown.
Hi Cam, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have always had a passion for health and fitness. I grew up active in Maine, which continued my entire life, and into college, where I played lacrosse in Florida. Shortly after graduating and relocating, I became a personal trainer. This is where I started to see the disconnect between fitness and nutrition. Many of my clients would spend hours in the gym, not seeing results from their workouts as they should because of needing to focus more on their nutrition. This led me to become a board-certified nutrition and wellness coach and open my first meal preparation service. Clients loved it- they finally realized that food is fuel, and they began seeing the results they wanted when establishing a solid nutrition routine with an active lifestyle.
I married my amazing husband, Cory, and we had our beautiful daughter, Rowan. Pregnancy was the first time in my life when fitness and nutrition was the last thing on my mind. After Rowan was born, I struggled with the weight I had gained and tried to lose it with methods that previously would have worked before childbirth. During this struggle, we opened Charleston’s first whole food nutrition-based meal prep service, Freshly Fueled, and were voted Best Of Charleston. Cory and I made all of the menus, did all of the cooking, and even personally delivered over 700 meals a week throughout the Charleston area. During the shutdowns in 2020, we had to close Freshly Fueled due to a lack of childcare. We shifted Freshly Fueled into an online nutrition coaching service, which became even more popular than the meal prep service.
This was when I realized that women had been chronically conditioned to under-eat and under-fuel, leading to an epidemic of eating disorders and hormone imbalances- contributing to the rise of thyroid disease. I went back and became a Women’s Hormone Specialist. I fell in love with coaching women and explaining that they needed to fuel their bodies to balance their hormones. They can THRIVE instead of just barely surviving and still get to their weight loss, performance, and wellness goals- while eating an appropriate amount of food. This is where my passion has continued to evolve. I am now a Thyroid Specialist, Men’s Hormone Specialist, and Gut Health Specialist, and I am also finishing up my Adrenal Health studies. I rely on whole food nutrition and have a strong foundation in holistic techniques to create an accessible and sustainable routine to promote overall wellness and health.
I am now CEO of Integrity Nutrition Coaching, an online coaching group comprising a group of certified coaches that has clients in 18 different states and 2 countries (outside of South Carolina and the United States). We have helped hundreds of women finally achieve their goal physique with optimal hormone health without spending hours in the gym or continuing to eat less and less while feeling restricted in their daily lives. Our company goal is to help 1,000,000 people in the coaching industry over our lifetime. We might have a long way to go, but I’m excited about the path that we’re on.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The fitness and nutrition industry is a place of constant comparison! It has not been easy or smooth at all! I have struggled with body image, worrying about what others have thought about me, and- like all social media-based workers- have dealt with my fair share of negative and mean comments. In April of 2022, I lost one of my best friends suddenly and unexpectedly. Mitch was one of my biggest supporters. He was also in the fitness industry as one of the top exercise programmers in the country. We had been working on a partnership between his programming and my nutrition coaching that was about to launch. When we lost him, that fell apart. But even worse- so did I. The business faltered significantly as I struggled to pull it together. Luckily, in September, I was introduced to some fantastic mentors who finally pulled me out of my funk and turned me around to have Integrity’s highest-grossing quarter in business history.
Outside of that, juggling being a mother, a CEO of a business that grosses six figures annually, and a wife have been the most challenging things in the world. I constantly have a million things I could be doing for my business- marketing, fulfillment, retention, lead generation, and furthering my education. I constantly have a million things that I could be doing for my very active five-year-old daughter- playing, pretending, painting, cooking for her, and trying not to just stick her in front of a screen so I can work. I constantly have a million things that I could be doing for my husband and home- cleaning the kitchen, cooking, going on dates, remembering to laugh at his terrible dad jokes, simply giving him my undivided attention without talking about work, and let’s not even talk about the mountain of laundry that never stops! Balancing all these things has been my biggest struggle and will always continue to be my biggest one. I respect other female CEOs who also try to balance these things- it takes work. You get the dirty looks for being the mom on a laptop at swim lessons (they’re behind a 2-way window and can’t even see you!); you get the stress of needing to help around the house, so your amazing husband isn’t always doing all the cooking and cleaning while you work and plan. You get the “mom guilt” in the moment when you’re playing pretend with your daughter, and she pulls out her leapfrog laptop and says, “sorry, mommy, not right now, I have work to do,” and starts fake typing away- knowing she learned it from you. It’s freaking tough sometimes.
As you know, we’re big fans of Integrity Nutrition Coaching. For our readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
We are an online nutrition coaching service that specializes in helping women finally reach their goals. We are known for helping women achieve amazing weight loss by eating more food instead of restricting and eating less and less. We do this through concentrating on whole food nutrition, eating enough food / ending the harmful diet culture brainwashing, and re-balancing hormones so your body can THRIVE, not just barely survive. We teach sustainable lifestyle changes that are easy and accessible for all types of women- from busy moms to college athletes- we can meet our clients exactly where they are and help them succeed.
We pride ourselves on the program our coaching is built on, our 3 Phase Method: Nourish to Flourish. This is crucial to our client’s transformations!
- In our first phase, we take them out of the extreme deficit or surplus diet and put them in their body’s homeostasis level of intake- where it is happy! In this phase, we monitor their biomarkers, re-balance hormones, develop a healthy gut microbiome, and educate our clients on whole food sources and the benefits of micronutrients from a colorful diet regarding hormone balances and hormones’ thyroid health.
- In our second phase, after we have built a solid foundation, their body is ready. We pursue their weight loss/muscle gain goals. Our clients see a lot of success here, much more quickly, because of the work completed in phase one.
- In our final phase, we teach our clients to leave their goal phase and return to their new homeostasis level. This is where we teach them lifestyle integration and how to maintain the great results they accomplished sustainably. We educate them on how to continue a lifestyle that will result in happy hormones and a thriving body and negate the need for a large diet phase ever again.
We’re proud of how a lot of our clients have maintained their weight loss years after finishing coaching with us! Our goal is to educate and teach, so we can be the last coach a client will ever need!
What do you think about happiness?
I love teaching women that they don’t have to starve themselves or follow crash diets while working out 5 times a week to lose weight. Watching a woman finally feel so confident and happy in her body and get there by following a sustainable plan based on fueling herself is the best feeling in the world. I remember hating how I looked in my postpartum body and trying to starve myself to lose weight, but it was not working. I remember hiding from pictures with Rowan as a newborn because of my size. I still have family pictures that were never printed because I hate how I look in them! I remember digging through my closet, not finding anything that fit or that I felt comfortable in, and causing a huge fight with Cory, leading to canceling the plans with friends or our much-needed date nights. I felt so helpless and so uncomfortable. I was so unhappy. If I can help just one woman and not feel like that- I am fulfilling my purpose. There is not a better feeling in the entire world.
