Meet Brittany Purcell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Purcell.

Hi Brittany, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi I’m Brittany originally from Savannah, Georgia. I have always loved the outdoors and taking on new adventures.  I graduated from Georgia Southern University. I  have a Bachelor Degree in Radiologic Science- Ultrasound. After moving to Easley in 2016 I found myself interested in learning something new. The business originally started with a vinyl cutting machine that I was gifted when I moved to South Carolina. T-shirts and vinyl decals were the first products I started creating, but I knew it was only the beginning. Eventually, I started combining different mediums by using vinyl decals and wood planks. The turning point in my business and making woodworking a career was when I listed my home for sale with the Burton, Williams & Co. At the closing I gifted Jenny and Lisa with a handmade item as a thank you gift. A few days later the realtors asked if I would be interested in making their closing gifts for them to give to their clients. This was a huge opportunity for my growing business. Wooden serving trays imprinted with the last names and GPS coordinates of the new homeowner became the backbone of RCC.

The next 3 years were full of challenges as I became a self-taught woodworker. You may call me stubborn, but when I’m passionate about something I will work hard until I figure it out.. I have been blessed more than I could have imagined. A huge accomplishment was being able to step down to part-time as a sonographer, giving me more time to devote to my personal joy of being in the shop creating for Rustic Carolina Creations.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been easy but one I am thankful for the opportunities to grow, adapt  and overcome.

One of the biggest challenges is knowing when to stop. I still struggle with knowing when to stop working on an important piece especially if you are tired. Nine times out of ten you are going to make a mistake. Now you are left with the task of double the work and half the pay. Make certain that you take the time to rest.

The second lesson I have learned is documentation. Having signed contracts, and getting a deposit is normal and should be expected.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am constantly expanding what I offer with wood. So far, I have designed various furniture pieces from doors to tables, custom wall art including signs and door hangers, and multiple-purpose trays. Trays were my foundation and continue to be my most versatile and popular item. The serving trays come with beautiful handles and a hand-painted design. While “catchall” or “dump” trays and charcuterie boards have been newer additions.

I am most proud of the fact I never gave up despite unexpected circumstances in my personal life. It would have been easier to quit, but I gave myself no other choice than to be successful. This led to many late nights working through problems and teaching myself woodworking skills and knowledge to use on future projects.

What sets me apart from others is my passion to create Display-worthy works of art that are individually tailored to each customer, whether it’s a door hanger or a large furniture piece.

Who else deserves credit for your story?
I am very blessed to have the support of my family. My mom, Amy, has spent many weekends working in the shop and going to events/shows with me. My Dad, Edwin, has also supported me in the shop but the most important role he has taken in my growing business is researching new items, techniques, and equipment.

Jenny Burton and Lisa Williams were the first realtors that trusted me with the closing gifts for their clients. They have seen me grow as I faced various challenges and learned lessons to better my work over the past 4 years. They not only supported my business but also me as a friend.

Liesel Schwab – is the bomb-diggity, and I am truly thankful for the endless friendship and support she has given me over the past 3+ years. Liesel offers a unique experience for her clients to customize their closing gift which leads to happier and repeat customers.
