Today we’d like to introduce you to Betsy Butler.

Betsy Butler

Hi Betsy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.

I moved to Charleston almost 20 years ago after receiving my degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
In 2010, I did my apprenticeship, and for the past 14 years, I have worked all over the country, honing in on my style of tattooing. My style is neotraditional illustrative tattoos with a focus on flora and fauna. I love figuring out ways to create art that accentuates the body and flows with a client’s natural beauty.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Tattooing is a very male-dominated industry with plenty of challenges for females. It was a long, arduous journey to break stereotypes and prove my work was valid. It can be a very toxic environment if you aren’t careful. The need to create a work-life balance that allows me time to be with my family and travel is very different than what is expected of a tattoo artist, but I knew it was necessary for my well-being. I chose to surround myself with people who inspired and uplifted me and helped me build self-confidence, be myself, and help others find their truth. I needed to remove that toxic energy and find a way to educate the public on the beauty and healing nature of tattoos. I wanted to change people’s perception of tattoos, create a safe space for that growth, and provide inclusion. All of this work has allowed me to keep the struggles of the past stay where they belong: in the past.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a tattoo artist who has been tattooing for 14 years. My style is described as neotraditional illustrative. I specialize in cute animals and pretty flowers. I love working with clients who allow me to express myself and enhance their beauty. I focus on the work flowing with the human body and feeling like it’s been there their entire lives. I love using large amounts of color and linework to create my designs. I’m very proud of the community of artists and clients I have built who spread positivity, love, and support each other. I firmly believe tattoos are more than just artwork on the skin. They are changing the way we feel about ourselves and allow us to heal wounds of the past.

How do you think about luck?
Luck is an exciting thing! There are so many aspects of life that make me feel lucky. Luckily, my artwork finds itself in front of people looking for what I do. Luckily, our worlds collide, and we can collaborate and find common ground. But luck can also be described as hard work. I work very hard to ensure that what I’m doing is accessible to people, and when they find me, they see some things they need.
