Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Hopkins.
Hi Anna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have worked as an interior designer for Cortney Bishop Design for most of my twenties. I have led many residential and commercial projects. Together we launched Harwood House – a fabric line with Holland & Sherry. We have released two collections – Cardinal Collection and Kalos Collection. Simultaneously, I have always been an artist. I majored in studio art, focusing on sculpture at the College of Charleston. My art evolved from wood sculptures to textiles over the years as I began to appreciate the quilts of the South. Through working in the interior design industry, I began to understand that bedding was always lacking – or an afterthought.
I also understood the impact a good bedspread could have on a room. So, I created a collection of woven bedspreads and blankets that could be mixed and matched within different design styles and homes. Organic cotton fibers were my first priority as these are eco-conscious and free of animal cruelty. We opted for sustainable dye practices as well. As a designer – I am always inspired by patterns found in architecture, historic textiles, tiles, and nature. I knew that I wanted my bedspreads to be pattern oriented so they could add interest to the room. I located a mill in Bristol, England, which was incredibly helpful in sourcing the yarns to weave up my designs. I spent about six months living in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where I focused on designing the brand and blankets. I was then moved back to Charleston, South Carolina, where I launched my collection in November 2022!
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
My goal was to create a woven textile out of cotton with the look and feel of wool. I liked wool’s nubby texture, but I wanted to keep things lightweight and plant-based. So there was a lot of time spent in development. It’s certainly been a longer process than I anticipated.
We’ve been impressed with Folk Textiles, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
A textile brand born from slow living—Folk celebrates the conscious, curated life. We invite you to take your time and connect with the items, people, and places surrounding you. Inspired by Mexico and made in England, Folk Textiles was founded by Charleston-based designer Anna Hopkins. With a background rooted in interior design, Anna set out to create a collection of woven bedspreads guided by mindful consumption and craft traditions. The name “Folk” represents the common comfort we find in sharing stories, practices, and creativity around the globe. We encourage you to stay present, prioritize your rest, and make your bed.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
Insight Timer is my new favorite meditation app, and of course, I love a good podcast (Jay Shetty, Rich Roll) But lots of yoga and a heavy gratitude practice have given me the most confidence as I pursue this career. Surrounding yourself with supportive people who work hard and are doing cool things is always inspiring.
