Meet Almetrice Weldon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Almetrice Weldon.

Hi Almetrice, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
ABOUT US

We are a Columbia, SC home-based business officially established in 2018.

THE REASON

Creating tasty desserts have been a family tradition for many years. In fact, the angel wings and halo on the logo represents my three dessert angels; two lovely grandmothers who have now gained their wings and my mom (the living angel). They all had/have a special place in their hearts for cooking & baking and that transferred to me as well. In addition to desserts, they taught me to have faith in everything you believe in, work hard, and God would do the rest.

IT LED TO THIS

I am from the Lowcountry and moved to Columbia, SC in 2000 to attend the University of South Carolina where I studied and graduated with a degree in Retail Management. After several years in retail, I decided to move into an HR career to fulfill my love for helping people (cliche I know 😊). I am still a professional HR Partner by day and spend the rest of my time with my family/friends and enjoying my passion of treat making & running the business.

THE JOURNEY IS JUST BEGINNING

I have been dipping treats for family and friends for some time. After continuing to be pushed by a variety of people in my circle, I finally decided to buckle down and turn my passion into a business.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing in life is 100% perfect 100% of the time. Your struggles are what make you stronger. I’d say the most challenging time of my life was 2020 when my little one was born prematurely due to complications of pre-eclampsia. We had a 3-month stay in the NICU so business had to be put on hold during that time. It was so hard not being able to do what I love but family is always the priority. He’s now 1 and a half and will soon be learning how to bake 😉.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I started with chocolate-dipped treats but have transitioned to mostly cakes & dessert recently. I mainly specialize in buttercream cakes with designs to coordinate with the customer’s event/theme. I am most proud of my progress over the past 3 years. I look back and never in my wildest dream thought I could produce the things that I am today. Who knew that this gift was there all along!?! My customers and the service provided to them paired with the love put into each item is what I believe sets me apart.

What are your plans for the future?
We are looking to expand from a home-based business to opening a Sweets & Savory mobile food business (maybe even franchise). There are so many other ideas but we’ll start there and see how it goes from there.
