Life & Work with Yung Zen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yung Zen.

Hi Zen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started music in April/May of 2020. One of my friends makes music himself and I thought it was cool and wanted to give it a try. I recorded my first ever song with him and posted it the day after because of how hyped I was. People started showing love so I kept it going to see how far I could get, and now we are here. I sat and put almost all of my hours into music for the last 2 years and I’ll continue to do so.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest obstacle when it came to my music was telling my parents, as I’m only 16. It took me a year into my career to finally tell them, and it paid off because they support me almost fully now. Another is just locals. People from where I’m from, don’t tend to support local artists and entrepreneurs when it comes to what they do. That’s something I deal with every day, the hate I get from people in my own city and no one believing in me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make music and go by the name ‘Yung Zen’. Besides the beats I record on, I do everything my own. I have my own home studio setup and I’ve been learning how to get better at that ever since I started. Some of my biggest accomplishments would be the fact that I’m still going strong no matter what anyone says about me or has to say about my music and the things I do. Recently me and a close friend who also makes music and goes by ‘Kae London’ got a class set up at our school and 2 studios built into the school. That’s something different and a thing that not much people have, so that was huge for us. I’d say I’m different from a lot of people because of my true love and passion for music. My drive to make it is unmatched.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The biggest thing in my opinion for music is building connections with people who do the same as you. It’s an easy task, it just takes effort and knowledge. The main and easiest way to build connections is through social media such as Instagram, TikTok, etc. There’s many different ways to can do it. Sometimes just sending a message to someone can build a connection. Showing love to other artists is also a good way to do so. It’s as simple as throwing a comment under someone’s post or reposting one of their songs so other people can see it.
