Life & Work with Phosha Ravenel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phosha Ravenel.

Hi Phosha, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started my journey by watching my mother as a little girl doing her own makeup every day before she would start her day. My mom was a makeup artist so I followed her footsteps. I was always fascinated by how someone so beautiful could look even more flawless than what she did before. I would always ask her if I could do my own and was instructed to wait until I got to high school. With permission, I started borrowing her makeup to do my own for school, mascara, eyeshadow, and lip gloss was my go-to look. Once prom time came around, I ventured on to foundation and lashes. I was hook! Once I mastered my own full face of makeup, my friends and family would always ask me to do theirs. That’s when I quickly realized that this was my passion and I needed to expand from just friends and family. I loved and still love everything about enhancing beauty, this is definitely a dream come true.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It wasn’t as smooth as I thought it would be. They’re a lot of makeup artist in my state. So, I had to find my specialty and stick with that. It has definitely been worth the bumps along the road and I wouldn’t change it for anything.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a traveling makeup artist in the Summerville, SC area. I specialize in beautifully natural makeup that complements each individual features to make them look flawlessly fresh and natural for any occasion. I am known to make your highlight POP lol. Which is where ever the sun naturally hits your face, sprinkle and glow with a gold-tone, in the most naturalist way of course. I am mostly proud of how my business is growing, I started off on a more intimate level and I’m branching off to bigger and better things. What sets me apart from others is my drive, though I may sometimes slow down. I will never stop or give up on my dreams and passion!

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice for finding a mentor and networking is to do your research and never be afraid to step outside of the box. When you see networking opportunities take a leap of faith and just go for it. I find it better to go to networking events where you don’t know anyone there and just talk to others around you. You never know who you could be talking to. The things that have worked well for me is doing things or going places that may make you feel uncomfortable. Sometimes we might find ourselves stagnant and not moving from the place we are at, when all me have to do is, go off and network with others. If you don’t have networking opportunities in your city, that’s the perfect time to take a mini vacation and really meet people you don’t know.
