Today we’d like to introduce you to NeMeia Washington.
Hi NeMeia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my company, Intentional, to start a small business last February. The pandemic caused me to begin working from home, lessening the time I interacted with others in person, & having a lot more time on my hands. I’ve been an avid journal & planner user for over a decade, & I figured others could also benefit from them. Self-care is essential, & I wanted to inspire others to take better care of themselves. The pandemic brought about a lot of time for people to self-reflect & improve their self-care, so I created products, daily posts, & write a weekly blog for people to use & be inspired.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Starting a small business was a challenge, especially with working 40+ hours per week & having children. It got frustrating when I began creating the products & needed inspiration for formatting. I also made my website, so it challenged me quite a bit to complete. I’m far from a tech person, but my determination to do it independently would not allow me to give up.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Outside of running Intentional, I work full-time for a hospital system managing behavioral health units. I have a bachelor’s degree in Sociology & a Masters’s degree in Psychology, & I’ve been in the behavioral health field for almost 20 years. My background & passion for the field has made it easy to stay motivated to pour into my business. I’m most proud of completing my Masters’s degree. I finished the majority of it while I was a single parent working 2 jobs, but I was able to maintain a 3.9 GPA. I took a leave of absence for almost a decade & returned to finish it during the pandemic. My love for self-care sets me apart from others. The amount of products I sell doesn’t determine how successful I am. I’d rather touch as many people as possible by spreading information about the importance of self-care in all areas of life. Certain populations, whether gender, race, or socioeconomic class, neglect self-care, & I aim to spread awareness about how that can negatively impact them.
We’re always looking for lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 Crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The biggest thing I learned during the COVID-19 Crisis was how to manage taking quality care of myself. My life had become routine before the pandemic, so I put my needs on the back burner. I learned to love things like working out, learning new recipes, meditating, & doing yoga. By scheduling these activities, I could put just as much into myself as I was putting into my job & family.
